Dear Neighbor, | Summer Tidings
|
Spring has sprung and summer will soon be here. Last summer left us quickly with a visit from Irene. She was surely an unwelcome guest, so unwelcome that they have retired the name! Jim and I were not here for the arrival of the hurricane, but arrived from Greece a few days later to see neighbors out and about lending a hand wherever possible. We live in a magnificent community.
This is the time of year when we welcome the greening grass, the blooming flowers, and the returning members from points south or west...or their winter homes. Along the beach wall you saw the piles of sand which was harvested in April. On Friday, some of this sand was spread along the entire length of our Main Beach to the limit of the high tide mark. There is still more available which will be spread over time. This first year of the Beach Restoration Project has been completed! Many thanks going to Wick Mallory, who has been at the helm of the project, along with all the members of the Beach Erosion & Restoration Task Force.
Recently surveys were sent to the community via the web and also mailed to members that did not have email access. Thanks to all of you that responded! Your input has provided the Board with a means to set direction for the future to maintain the beauty and well-being of our community.
The beaches and ponds are indisputably our most valuable assets, so we will continue to move forward to preserve them. The West Beach Jetty Project will be next. All permitting is in place and the Task Force will be meeting soon to move forward. Soon we will be convening another Task Force to address the Ponds. The mapping of the ponds took place this past week and by July we should have a recommended plan of action for your approval.
Giants Neck would not be the same without our volunteers! It's their sacrifice of time and effort for the good of the community that makes this community so special. I want to thank each and every committee member for serving. Also, thanks go out to the Board of Governors who also serve in a voluntary capacity with the common goal of preserving the integrity of our community. They have been invaluable to me as President and I applaud them for their dedication. Prior to the Annual Meeting on Saturday, June 16th beginning at 8:30 AM, we will honor our volunteers at a "Coffee and..." The entire community is welcome to attend to meet up with neighbors and laud our volunteers!
We have a full agenda for the Annual Meeting which is provided below along with the proposed budget for the upcoming year. We hope to see you at this important meeting. In addition, there will also be Membership meetings held on July 28th and August 25th when we will continue to dialogue on the issues that face our community and plans for the future. I hope to see you at these meetings, but if you are unable to attend, please feel free to contact a Board Member to share your thoughts and suggestions.
It has been an honor to serve as President for another year. I wish every one of you a safe and enjoyable summer at Giants Neck Beach! Joan P. Malone, President GNBA Board of Governors |
