Extra Mile Awards
Several times a year, the Board of Education presents Extra Mile Awards to individuals or groups who have gone above and beyond in their contributions to the District. At this meeting, Extra Mile Awards were presented to several individuals who played important roles in supporting the District's bond prior to the March vote. These Extra Mile Award honorees are Friends of Rye Co-Chairs Mary Emery and Nancy Pasquale, and Rye High School Science Teachers Suzanne Abramson, Robert Coppola, Karen Dimaggio, Connor Dowling, Jennifer Giaquinto, Amy Leahy, Bruna Mascia, Danielle Pizzuto, Erin Sornberger, Matthew Teitsch, and Jaime Zung. The awards were presented by Board Member Katy Keohane Glassberg, who thanked the recipients and invited them to the podium to accept small tokens of appreciation. |

Special Announcement
Board of Education President Laura Slack announced that Rye High School earned an impressive ranking on US News & World Report's list of the Best High Schools across the nation. Out of nearly 22,000 public high schools in 49 states, Rye High School ranked 72nd in the country. RHS also ranked 11th within New York State. Schools are recognized based on how well they prepare students for college, test scores, and other factors. The schools included on the list received either Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals - RHS earned a Gold. Mrs. Slack congratulated the RHS staff and students. |

Superintendent's Report
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shine presented a report to the Board regarding recent school activities and upcoming events. He highlighted the Midland School Fair and the Milton School Science Fair, announced that the Middle School musical will be held on May 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center, described the Osborn Dollars for Duffels fundraising project, and discussed the recent High School Scholars Dinner during which 116 juniors were recognized for their academic achievements (39 received book awards from various colleges). Dr. Shine also reported that ninth grader Charles Hager achieved a perfect score on the 2012 National Latin Exam. |

Ben Bedini Plaza
The Board approved The Alumni and Friends fo the Rye High School to proceed with fund raising activities for the gift of the Ben Bedini Plaza, named for a former RHS coach. Mrs. Slack thanked the organization for its efforts to honor Coach Bedini and beautify the High School stadium area. |

Budget Hearing

The Board held the Budget Hearing at the May 8 meeting and accepted comments and questions from the public.
The approved budget for the 2012-2013 school year is $73580,000, a 2.33% increase from the 2011-2012 school budget. The budget, which is below the tax levy cap of 1.96% and represents an estimated tax rate increase of 1.75%, will be put to a public vote on May 15. Several members of the community addressed the Board on the budget.
On May 15, voters will also elect three members of the Board of Education.
Patrick Cox, Nancy Pasquale, Chris Repetto, and Laura Slack are seeking election to the Board. |

Where to Vote There is one polling place: Rye Middle School. Voting hours are 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. Who May Vote
All Rye City School District residents who are registered voters are eligible to vote. Registered voters must be, by law, 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of the Rye City School District for at least 30 days preceding May 15. You may register up to the day of the election at the Board of Elections, 25 Quarropas Street, White Plains. |
