A Summary of the 3/13/12 Rye City School District Board of Education Meeting

 

Superintendent's Report

Superintendent Dr. Shine reported on recent activities and achievements throughout the District. For Midland School, he highlighted a recent lesson on Greek mythology as well as a Read Aloud in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday. For Milton, he shared a recap of a recent visit from two United States Navy captains in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812. He announced that children's poet Ted Scheu visited Osborn this week, and also provided an update on use of the Osborn School garden. Dr. Shine also noted that the Parsons Street Players recently presented three excellent productions of Pippin. In concluding his report, Dr. Shine congratulated sports teams and athletes on recent accomplishments. The Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball, Ice Hockey, Boys Swimming & Diving, Boys Track & Field, and Girls Track & Field Teams were named Scholar Athlete Teams for the winter season. The Boys Varsity Squash Team, ranked 2nd in the country out of public high school squash teams, recently took a third place national title at the 2012 High School Squash Championships, and track student Taylor Love placed fourth in the state in the 1600 Meter Run at the New York State Winter Track Championships held on March 3.

Resignations/Retirements

The Board approved the resignation of Rye High School Assistant Principal for Guidance and Student Support Services Mr. Robert McKiernan, effective June 30, 2012. Also approved were the retirements of four staff members; Debra Bobson, Marci DeRario, Susan Lovequist, and Craig Sandhaus. Board President Laura Slack noted that there will be more opportunities to thank these individuals for their service and contributions to the District and our students as we approach the end of the school year in June.

Budget Presentation

Dr. Shine and Assistant Superintendent for Business Kathleen Ryan provided information on the proposed 2012-13 school year budget. Dr. Shine summarized details of the budget, noting a tax levy of 1.96% [within the tax levy cap], and Mrs. Ryan provided a presentation explaining the budget breakdown, mandates, and changes from last year.

Certification of Election Results

The Board certified the bond election results, which were in favor of the bond with 1842 yes votes and 1048 no votes.
