A Summary of the 1/10/12 Rye City School District Board of Education Meeting

Superintendent's Report
At each meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Shine presents a report to the Board of Education. This meeting's report noted that a number of students' names were left off the original list of the College Board's AP Scholar Award recipients that was shared through the District website and local media outlets. The revised press release has been posted on www.ryeschools.org. Dr. Shine congratulated All-County music students Nabil Azim, Will Hammer, Anders Jensen, Rebecca Jordan, Kiefer Mueller, Aidan Pasquale, and Esther Yu. Also highlighted in Dr. Shine's report were the Live Music Event held in the MS/HS Library, nomination of the "Beyond 2011" RHS yearbook as a Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Crown Finalist, the RHS Student Council Toy Drive, holiday outreach at Midland, public speaking activities at Milton, and a tree-planting at Osborn as well as an achievement earned by Osborn's Ballroom Dance Team. Additionally, Dr. Shine congratulated the following teams for earning Scholar Athlete Team status for the fall season: Boys Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Girls Swimming and Diving, Girls Tennis, and Volleyball. The report also included a reminder that the next Heard in Rye presentation will be held on Wednesday, January 25, at Rye Neck High School.
Gifts to the District

The Board approved a gift in the amount of $3,970 from the Milton School PTO for a SMARTBoard, and a gift of $5,000 from the Class of 2011 for a scholarship and the setting up of a "Class of 2011 Scholarship Fund."

Enrollment

Dr. Shine provided a report on the 2011-12 enrollment and the 2012-13 projections by grade level, illustrating enrollment growth at the elementary, middle, and high school levels through graphs and charts.

Re-cap of Capital Project and Bond Vote

Dr. Shine presented a recap of the capital project and bond vote, reflecting on the challenges of gaining support for the bond, the enrollment imperative, what needs to be considered, and next steps. In reiterating the outcome of the vote, Dr. Shine stated, "We are obviously disappointed, especially because addressing our enrollment/space need is, I believe, fundamental to the continued success of our students. As a result, I have been discussing and considering next steps." A special Board of Education Meeting will be held on January 17 during which Dr. Shine will review his draft recommendation.
