Fall Dives = Great Vis Get Your Dive On |
September 25, 2012 503-304-5383 |
|
Greetings!
I looked into my back yard yesterday and noticed a small collection of oak leaves on the ground. Taking the dogs out for their early morning walk I put on a sweatshirt (still wearing shorts and sandals) to keep warm. Vis in the Hood Canal is improving as the algae layer and lion's main jellyfish die off. Yep, Fall has arrived in the Northwest.
HydroSports just wrapped up one of the best sales months in our history. Our certification numbers are up over last year. Our instructor team is growing as Kristen Seabury returns from her summer job teaching diving on Catalina Island. Kristen brings another instructor to our team, Matt McAlister, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
I celebrated my 20th anniversary as a scuba diver September 22 by leading an Instructor Development Class for Jim Smith and Jay Olsen. I can't think of a better way to celebrate than to share my passion with two great soon-to-be instructors.
What can we do to help you reach your diving goals and dreams? A DPV Specialty Class? Search and Recovery Specialty Class? Boat dives with Pacific Adventures? A Spring Break dive trip to Catalina, a Fiji trip next May or Palau liveaboard next October? How about a First Aid refresher class this fall. Are you ready for a Rescue Diver class? Are you ready to become a Divemaster and help us train new divers?
Our mission is to help each of you reach your diving and snorkeling goals and dreams. Come on down for a visit.
We look forward to blowing bubbles with you soon!
Sincerely,
Mark Fischer

Bon Voyage Party Wednesday Night |

Let's Go Crabbing! |
Join Jeff Trembly, Jay Olsen and Jeff Barnes for a day of Oregon Seafood Harvesting. Meet the team at the southwest corner of the Safeway parking lot on Highway 101 in Florence at 9 AM.
The plan is to be on the North Jetty by 9:40 so we can catch an incoming tide for a nice drift dive. This will give us plenty of time for a second dive at 12:30 for slack tide at crab hole. Everyone make sure to bring a game bag, crab gauge, and shellfish license if you want to take advantage of the bounty of Dungeness crab in the area. If you've never hunted for crab, you're in for a real treat as I will teach you the techniques for doing so. Besides the crab gear mentioned as well as your SCUBA gear, it's advisable to bring a small dive light to be able to explore the many cracks and crevices in the rocks that make up the jetty (lots of crab there too).
As usual, the conditions vary quite a bit at Florence so we'll hope for good visibility. It's a fairly protected environment making it a safe dive for all skill levels. After the jetty, if everyone has the energy for a fun dive at the Lake Woahink dive park, I and my crew of professionals will be happy to lead dives to the Submarine, 18 foot shark, and many other features in the lake including over a dozen wrecks, Ed's giant garden, the KISS concert, and the swim through mountain. It's nice too that your gear gets a good rinsing from the salt water during this fresh water lake dive.
Game bags and gear rentals can be found at HydroSports. |

Combine Passion and Compassion in Fiji, May 2013
Combine a Dental Mission and Scuba Excitement |
Most people think of Fiji as an island paradise, but there are many in remote villages that are in tremendous need of dental care. Join a team of dental professionals on a journey of compassion and passion. The 150 children of Koro Village, Fiji, have limited access to dental care, screening and services. Our goal is to bring dentists and dental hygienists to the village of Kadavu Koro, Fiji, May 2013. During our stay each team will conduct four afternoons of screening and treatment for the village members. We'll stay at the Matava Eco-Resort. Located on the island of Kadavu, Matava is a secluded, manicured dive resort adjacent the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the most renowned dive destinations in the Pacific. Our stay will include 10 boat dives, including the world famous Manta dive. Matava also boasts great deep sea fishing, surfing, sea kayaking and snorkeling. HydroSports is looking for Dentists and Dental Hygienists to participate in a Dental Mission to the island of Kadavu, Fiji May 2013. We are also seeking an electrician and others to assist with our efforts. In 2010 a team of two dentists and five non-dental types served the dental needs of the village of Kadavu Koro by holding four afternoons of clinic hours. We served over 70 villagers and taught all the children of the village how to use a toothbrush and toothpaste. Working with a US based 501 c 3 non-profit, a portion of the trip cost may be tax deductible (speak with your accountant). The trip fee, TBA, includes: - Round trip air fare from Los Angeles to Kadavu Fiji
- 7 nights lodging (double occupancy)
- Five days of two-tank dives
- All meals at the resort
- Transfers to and from the resort
The trip does not include: - Airfare to Los Angeles
- Souvenirs, gratuities, beverages at the bar
Note: Airfare may change until paid in full. A $200 non-refundable deposit is needed with your reservation. Payment in full is due March 1, 2013. Contact Mark Fischer, 503-304-5383, for additional details. To read the impressions of our first dental mission click HERE . |
