Yellow House Weekends in June

Divers Suit Up at the Yellow House in Hoodsport, Washington

We're headed to the Yellow House on back-to-back weekends in June.

We have room for  three or four fun divers June 2 and 3 when the staff is taking our May Open Water Diver class up for training. Jeff and Ryan will be on hand leading the weekend.

June 9 and 10 is planned as a fun weekend. I plan to dive Octopus Hole, Sund Rock and the Yellow House during the weekend. Ken plans to have tech gear and his rebreather on hand. While we are not planning any open water diver training dives we're always up for helping you earn your next specialty diver certification.

Rumors are that Matt Jenkins will make an appearance on one or both weekends. Carol and Gregg Cline, Jay Olsen, Jeff Barnes and Greg Sykora round out the staff we expect to see in Hoodsport in June.

Congratulations to Kristen Seabury who is nearly finished with her Instructor Development Course. Kristen will be working as an Instructor on Catalina Island this summer before returning to Salem in August for one more semester at Willamette University.

Reserve your space at the Yellow House before we run out of beds. The Saturday night pot-luck dinner has been spectacular this year. Don't miss the diving, the gastronomic delights and the super company.

Help Kristen Become an Instructor

I'm looking for four certified divers to come to the pool this Wednesday night, May 31, to act as open water students as Kristen practices teaching in confined water.

You will be asked to perform several skills learned in the open water diver class incorrectly to test Kristen's ability to prevent or correct the problem. You will then be asked to perform the skill correctly.

If you are up for being a "problem child" for Kristen, please email me at mark@hydrosports.com for further details.

HydroSports Named
Oceanic Warrior Training Center
Scuba Warrior in Training
SCUBA Warrior in Training
Throughout the years Oceanic has supported the myriad of programs that engage our injured military personnel and introduce them to the sport of diving. This year it was time to launch our own signature program. With the funding made available from the sales of the USA product line, Oceanic hopes to reach and support many more of these veterans than previously possible.

The USA product line is attractively styled, appropriately in red, white, and blue. 7% of Oceanic's sales from the USA line will be committed each year towards this program. We anticipate that this program should provide $250 to each of 300-350 qualified veterans. The $250 will be applied directly to the veterans gear purchases through our participating Oceanic Dealers Nationwide.

HydroSports Dive and Travel has been named an Oceanic Warrior Training Center. HydroSports is able to accept approved grants and provide scuba training for local Warriors.

Revisit the Cold War
Dive a Titan I Missile Silo

Attending grade school in the early 60s I remember the air raid sirens going off. Sitting at my desk on the last Friday of each month the sirens would sound at 11 AM. Each of us would get off our chair, get underneath our desk, cover the back of our neck with our hands and wait for the "all clear" signal. We were preparing for a missile attack from the Soviet Union.

In response to this threat the US military based hundreds of Titan I missiles across the country ready for a counter attack in what was called MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction.

While the Cold War has ended, the Titan I Missile silo near Royal City, Washington, has been turned into a dive site. Join us this summer as we venture to Kennewick to explore this unique dive site. The cost of this two-tank dive is $145 per person.

Prerequisites and Requirements:

  • Advanced certification or higher required
  • Photocopy verification of C Cards
  • Recent Cold Water Dives
  • Pony Bottle recommended (rentals available from UnderSea Adventures)
  • Night Diving Light and backup
  • Chem light or tank light
  • Statement of Understanding
  • Missile Silo Waiver
  • Good physical shape - walk in is moderately difficult

Return the release documents to HydroSports with your $50 deposit. Dates of dives will be posted this week on the HydroSports Facebook page and the shop website.
