Greetings!
I woke up recently, sipped a cup of coffee, dressed, hooked up Huckleberry, our Shih Tzu, and took off for our morning walk. As we walked past the recently mowed wheat field I noticed a layer of fog hugging the field, frost clinging to car windows and roof tops and Canadian geese honking and flying south in anticipation of winter weather. The sun was bright and low in the eastern sky. Surely Fall has arrived.
For divers Fall ushers in the very best local dive conditions of the year; shorter days, less algae, better viability and night dives that start before 10 PM! Last week my friend Harvey dove Sund Rock and reported being able to see from one end of the fishing trawler to the other, nearly 60 feet. What does this mean for those of us who relish great vis and local diving? It means we need to pull our gear out of storage, inspect and service it if needed, call a dive buddy and head out to dive. I can't wait to get to Hoodsport November 5. Advanced Open Water divers, Instructor Candidates and a chance to dive locally with my new video camera. Come join me or make your own dive plans. Take full advantage of our Fall dive opportunities.
Let's go dive,

Medical Mission Fiji 2011 Return to Kadavu May 7 to 14, 2011 |
Combine passion and compassion as HydroSports makes a return visit to the Matava Eco Resort on the island of Kadavu in Fiji.
During our visit in May 2010 we had the opportunity to dive daily on the Great Astrolabe Reef, enjoyed a lovo (traditional meal), kava and learned the history of Kadavu.
Beyond diving, we provided dental care to nearly 100 members of the village of Kadavu Koro who are remote by both time and distance from government provided dental care. Our trip included both dental professionals and ordinary folks who wanted to assist.
Final details of our trip are being worked on at press time and will be available shortly.
If you are a medical, dental or optometric professional and would like to learn more about combining your passion for deep sea fishing, diving or snorkeling with your compassion for providing care please contact me.

Cressi Big Eyes Evolution Crystal |
Manufactured with a revolutionary Crystal Silicone the Cressi Big Eyes Evolution mask represents the next generation in mask technology from the company that invented the modern dive mask.
Double Injection Technology creates a stronger mask skirt and more comfortable contact angle with the face. The raked angle of the lenses and downward teardrop shape yields an 80 degree by 75 degree field of vision according to Rodales Scuba Lab.

CPR Change! ABC Becomes CAB | Watch a video demonstration and explanation of the new 2010 CPR Guidelines by clicking HERE
Refinements have been made to recommendations for
immediate recognition and activation of the emergency
response system based on signs of unresponsiveness, as
well as initiation of CPR if the victim is unresponsive with no breathing or no normal breathing (ie, victim is only gasping).
"Look, listen, and feel for breathing" has been removed from the algorithm.
Continued emphasis has been placed on high-quality CPR (with chest compressions of adequate rate and depth, allowing complete chest recoil after each compression, minimizing interruptions in compressions, and avoiding excessive ventilation).
There has been a change in the recommended sequence
for the lone rescuer to initiate chest compressions before giving rescue breaths (C-A-B rather than A-B-C). The lone rescuer should begin CPR with 30 compressions rather than 2 ventilations to reduce delay to first compression.
Compression rate should be at least 100/min (rather than
"approximately" 100/min).
Compression depth for adults has been changed from the range of 1 to 2 inches to at least 2 inches (5 cm).
These changes are designed to simplify lay rescuer training and to continue to emphasize the need to provide early chest compressions for the victim of a sudden cardiac arrest. |
What's Up at HydroSports? |

Our Fall Open Water class special ends December 31. We have room in our November Open Water class for a few more divers. Matt Jenkins is leading this class.
We have room for one more Open Water class at $125 per person in December if there is interest. Click for DETAILS.
