The Dakini Principle in Tibetan Buddhism
Selection 1

When we learn about scientific laws or principles they are rigid (like gravity). These laws, mathematical rules and principles are used to describe outer effects. However, the dakini, or feminine power being whose energetic presence is invoked as the great mother dakini, is a living and very active fluid dynamic between that which is known, that which is a possibility, and that which is unknown. We deserve to have more understanding of the deeper dynamics by which even our limited mental life occurs. We deserve to have the vast understanding of unlimited inner life unfold to us by no one less than the great teacher, Vajrayogini herself

Jan 14, 2006 & Oct 29, 2008

Dakini So, what's a dakini, anyway?

Dakini is a Sanskrit term for a tantric female deity. Not to be confused with the Western idea of deity as a God, in Buddhism, a deity is a manifestation of enlightened energy. Dakinis are embodiments of female enlightened energy.

In Tibetan, Dakini is rendered as Khandro. Khandro means "She who traverses the sky", or sometimes simply, "sky dancer." Dakinis (or Khandroma) are the ultimate yoginis.

Vajrayogini (or Nanjorma in Tibetan) is the Queen of the Dakinis. Vajrayogini is not bound by time and space, because she does not believe in time or space. A Buddha-level being, she is known as the "Great Bliss Queen" since she bestows bliss (or enlightenment.) Because of this, she is also known as the "Mother of Buddhas."  If you were to attain enlightenment by the practice and blessings of Vajrayogini, then she would indeed be the mother of your enlightenment.

Dakinis are typically depicted in Eastern iconography as wrathful. This wrathfulness is not to be confused with anger. Instead it represents a being who is highly energetic (powerful). This intense energy is directed towards destroying the delusions (such as egocentrism, anger and ignorance,) and removing obstacles from the path of the practitioner to aid in the transformation of ordinary beings into enlightened beings.

The Dakini Principle in Tibetan Buddhism

Selection 2

When the wisdom being who is called to the meditation place arrives, how does she come? Vajrayogini (Nanjorma in Tibetan), the great Buddha dakini, by nature is not limited. The great message is selflessness; It transcends time and place; it is timeless. Through it you can become strong, but never proud. Because Nanjorma is not limited by time and space, she is capable of being alive in the extraordinary manner described in the tantras. The vast and spacious qualities of aliveness of Vajrayogini invites us to another way of being that is our destiny by receiving and practicing her very special practice.

Vajrayogini small Vajrayogini Winter Retreat in New Mexico

December 27th, 2008 3PM - January 4th, 2009 3PM
at the Madonna Retreat Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Vajrayogini is one of the most beloved and powerful Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism. She embodies: (1) the fully enlightened female, wild, fiery, and energetic aspect of a Buddha; (2) the wisdom aspect leading to Buddhahood; and (3) the dakini, inspirational aspect leading the practitioner to enlightenment. Vajrayogini's practice is said to be well-suited to those with strong desirous attachment, and to those living in the current "degenerate age".
