Meet Taylor Carver

Taylor CarverTaylor is a 14-year-old 8th grade home- schooled student diagnosed with a tectal plate glioma at age 6. Since diagnosis, Taylor has done extremely well and stays quite busy - she plays piano (she performed at last year's Flight of the Butterflies honoring Dr. Claire Mazewski!), is a Girl Scout, enjoys photography, loves to cook & knit, and volunteers at her local animal shelter. We recently learned that Taylor is also a poet and are so impressed with the following work we want to share it with our readers:

I sit here in silence as I watch nature bloom.
The trees swaying, the leaves rustling,
is how I hear the tune.
If you know a Super Kid we should feature here, please let us know.

Families helping families

One great way in which our families help each other is through fundraising on Firstgiving.com. As an example, our newest fundraising page honors 11-year-old Taylor Hulsey while helping other kids with brain tumors. Thanks to Taylor's mom Vicki and friend Angie!

Delta Phi Epsilon goes all out for "Brian's Battle"
In October, 2009, with Kennesaw State University freshman Katie Reilly in the lead, this remarkable group of sorority sisters organized a fundraiser in honor of Katie's high school friend Brian Parks who is battling a brain tumor. Through a bake sale, sale of specially made T-shirts, an auction of 20 baskets filled with items ranging from food to Thrashers tickets, and a raffle that included prizes such as teeth whitening and personal training sessions, these young women raised $1,505!  Half of that amount was presented as a gift to Brian and his family and the other half was presented to BTFC (as the charity designated by Brian) to help other kids with brain cancer.  We are SO proud of Katie and all of these wonderful and compassionate young ladies for their exceptional efforts and caring spirits.  Thank you Delta Phi Epsilon!

Established in 1983 in Atlanta, GA, the Brain Tumor Foundation for Children was the first non-profit organization in the United States to focus on pediatric brain tumor disease. The Foundation's mission is: "To provide financial assistance, social support, and information for families of children with brain and spinal cord tumors; fund research projects that improve treatment options and search for a cure; and raise public awareness of the disease and advocate on behalf of children who are affected." BTFC serves children and families throughout Georgia and the Southeast. Our south Florida chapter, Christina's Kidz, is dedicated to helping Florida families.
