Utah Heritage Foundation's Salt Lake Modern Committee presents Art and Architecture; a profile of mid-century modern design and art.
Salt Lake City, Utah September 17, 2009 - The Salt Lake Modern Committee, a division of the Utah Heritage Foundation will host a tour of a modern home to create awareness of mid-century architecture in Utah and its relationship to art. The home designed by prominent Utah Architect and U of U professor; the late John Sugden. 'This event will highlight the unique relationship and interplay between modern art and architecture in a mid-century modern home, showing the amazing possibilities for creating exceptional living space through rehabilitation', says Kirk Huffaker, Executive Director of Utah Heritage Foundation. Homeowner artist John Bell will exhibit his architecturally informed paintings along with a preview of new work that will be shown during the international Art Basel Art Fair in December. A portion of the proceeds from the sell of Bell's artwork will benefit Salt Lake Modern. Saturday October 10, 2009; 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Space is limited. The tour is free.

John Sugden studied with the masters of modernism at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and brought an eye for structural artistry in mid-century architecture back to Utah where he grew up. The career of Sugden and his work was exhibited for the first time in 1989, but not again until 2007. As one of Utah's masters of modernism, research has documented the breadth of Sugden's construction and influence in architecture.
Artist John Bell is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is influenced by varied mediums informing his artistic style, combining elements of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, social commentary, pop art, and modern sculpture and the ideas and philosophies about space addressed in modern architecture.
