Six Hot Tips for Landing Your First Job!
By Shelly Bokman
It's that time of year when many students decide to look for their first job. Check out this list of job hunting tips and land the job of your dreams!
1. Think about what you like to do and if there are any jobs that might
match up with your skills or hobbies.
If you like to play golf, could you get a job at your local golf course as a cart attendant or caddy? If you enjoy little kids, could you get a job as a camp counselor? If you are really into music, head to your local music store first to see if they are hiring. A job that involves something you are interested in will be much more enjoyable than dishing up fries!
2. Dress appropriately when you go job hunting. While a suit and tie is not necessary, you won't want to arrive in ripped jeans and a Budweiser T-shirt either. Tiny tops and short skirts will not get you a job. This is not the moment to express your individuality. Take out the piercings and wear conservative, clean clothes. You will most likely be talking with an adult and your goal is to get hired. You want to "look" responsible and reliable.
3. Have the information you need to fill out a job application with you.
You'll need your social security number, names and phone numbers of references. Potential employers will ask for job references; if you've had other jobs you'll list the name and phone number of your supervisor. They may also ask for personal references. You'll want to put the names and numbers of adults who know you and can vouch for your character (not your parents though).
4. Be confident-even if you are shaking inside.
Look the person in the eye. Speak clearly and loud enough so you can be heard. Ask questions and make conversation. Part of what they are looking for is to see if you can comfortably carry on an intelligent conversation in a friendly manner.
5. Follow up.
If you put in an application or have an interview and you haven't heard back-call or stop by. Sometimes business owners or managers get very busy with day-to-day operations and don't have the time to call applicants back as quickly as they'd like. By following up you are showing you are persistent and that you really want the job. That could be the bonus point that lands you the job.
6. Once you have a job, be responsible about keeping it.
Things like being on time, communicating clearly, getting along with co-workers and being able to accept and respond to authority are all important job skills that you will need for the rest of your life.
