The Merchant of Venice
Students Perform Shakespeare
Students and faculty crowded into Mrs. Heather Page's English class this quarter, buzzing with excitement for her students' performances of select scenes in Shakespeare's, The Merchant of Venice.
Despite the pressures of memorizing lines, creating costumes, and performing in front of a large crowd, the students did a fabulous job. Each performer added his unique touch to the role he played. Some students used music to emphasize their scene. Others decided to modernize their scene, placing the characters in a different time period altogether. One group showed off their special-effects skills, using a computer animation to accompany their performance.
Each performance was followed by a question and answer session, which sparked discussion amongst the class regarding the roles the students' selected, why they portrayed the characters in certain ways, and how to interpret the characters' motivations in the play.
Each participating student did a wonderful job. There certainly is some acting talent at HHNE!

Clash of the Classes Showing Off School Spirit
This month, students faced-off against their peers in a wacky week of school spirit challenges.
Throughout the week, students dressed in costumes, showed off their class colors, participated in a game show, and made funny videos, all to compete for the right to claim that their grade had the most school spirit! All the grades also competed in "Penny Wars" and, at the end of the week, all proceeds went to charity.
Clash of the Classes was an exciting event, with plenty of opportunity to show off HHNE students' creativity, resourcefulness, and school spirit.

Ladies' Night A Night of Food, Fashion, and Fun!

HHNE was filled with women earlier this month for the Sixth Annual Ladies' Night. Planned with an Asian theme in mind, the ladies enjoyed a delicious meal which included dishes like sushi and egg rolls.
As always, the event was in part a fundraiser for the Hartford Women's Shelter. HHNE was host to a number of vendors, selling jewelry, clothing, make-up, candy, and more! However, the real attractions were the performances by HHNE students. Led by director Michelle Fenton Begley, the Girls' Choir impressed the guests with their vocal skills and energy, as did students from the classes of HHNE's own Mrs. Hindy Kalmenson. When the songs were over, members of the school's Hip-Hop Dance Club wowed the audience with their dance routine. The night wrapped up with dessert, a raffle, and a fabulous fashion show, featuring HHNE girls modeling clothing from Debbie Sheriden's Cabi clothing line.
Ladies' Night was once again a wonderful and meaningful event. So many of our students and parents were involved, and in particular Tova Goldfischer ('14), Miriam Young ('15), Avigayil Halpern ('14), and our alumna Lahevet Pollack ('09). Special thanks to Mrs. Stacey Trencher for all of her coordination.
