Speaker Teaches Boys About Cancer

HHNE welcomed Dr. Howard Hochman on March 1st for a presentation about men's health. Dr. Hochman spoke to the male students about testicular cancer, the number one cancer found in men in their 20s and 30s. The doctor discussed methods for detection, the progression of the disease, and treatments. During the presentation, the students were provided an opportunity to ask Dr. Hochman questions about what they were learning and other medical subjects came up as well.

We were very happy to have Dr. Hochman as a guest at HHNE.  The boys learned valuable information and advice that will affect their health positively. Special thanks to Dr. Stu Kesler for referring us to Dr. Hochman.

Remembering Yonadav Hirshfeld z"l
Presented by Dr. Vera Schwarcz

On Monday, February 27, we were privileged to host Dr. Vera Schwarcz, a professor at Wesleyan University and prominent member of the Hartford Jewish community.

Dr. Schwarcz presented the life of Yonadav Hirshfeld z"l, one of the eight young students killed in the Mercaz HaRav Kook Yeshiva terrorist attack in Jerusalem four years ago. Mrs. Schwarcz spoke to our 9th and 10th graders about Yonadav's ability to actualize his unique strengths, from his devotion to serving God to playing music on his recorder. Yonadav was the grandson of Rabbi Charles and Minnie Batt, leaders of the Hartford Jewish community and founders of institutions such as the Sigel Hebrew Academy.

Throughout her presentation, Dr. Schwarcz referred to a touching booklet prepared by Mrs. Sally Gelb. The booklet contains information about Yonadav, the Batt  family in Hartford, and even included a letter from Yonadav's mother addressed to HHNE students. A copy of the booklet was given to each student and in it they read some very moving poems written by Yonadav himself from which one can easily tell that he was a person with truly special qualities.

We thank Dr. Schwarcz very much for her educational and meaningful presentation.

Basketball Season Comes to an End

The start of spring means the end of basketball season here at HHNE. Both the boys' and girls' teams made an amazing effort this year and we look forward to next year for another exciting season!  Thank you to Fernando Morales and Bhupal Babajiyavar, the boys' and girls' coaches, respectively.

The bond formed between students during participation in team sports is one HHNE prides itself upon and we offer opportunities throughout the year for students to get involved. This spring, students are excited for boys' ultimate frisbee and girls' softball!  Make sure to keep up with our calendar for game details and come out to support our teams!
