Summer Games Recap
Taking the field for the first event, athletes and partners competing in the Unified Bocce Tournament on Friday, June 4th kicked off the annual Summer Games at the University of Vermont.
With the beautiful backdrop of a cloudless evening sky, Special Olympics Vermont 2010 Summer Games began with an Opening Ceremony on the Moulton
Winder Field at UVM. Featuring several guest speakers including Senator Sanders, Senator Leahy, Lt. Governor Dubie, and Dave Estes from TD Bank, the ceremony was led by Master of Ceremonies, Tim Kavanagh. The ceremonies honored the 745 athletes who participated in the three-day event and introduced Team Vermont, 45 athletes, coaches, and partners set to compete in the 2010 Special Olympic National Games in Lincoln Nebraska July 17th-24th. More than 300 runners participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run, with 40 runners and support vehicles carrying the final torch to opening ceremonies, signifying the start of the 2010 Summer Games. With competitions in track and field, bocce, softball, and aquatics the 2010 Summer Games were the largest event in the 39 year history of Special Olympics Vermont. Overcoming weather warnings and rainfall, athletes, supporters, and volunteers helped to make this our most successful Summer Games yet.
