UPCOMING TASTINGS

  Summer of Riesling

The Summer of Riesling is almost here. While we won't be selling all-Riesling only-Riesling, we will have many tastings featuring this (not-always-sweet-and-if-you-think-it-is-you're wrong) grape.

Our second tasting is with Dan Melia of Mosel Wine Merchants. He'll be pouring selections from his excellent portfolio, including Frankly Wines favorites Gunther Steinmentz and Clemens Busch. These wines are made using natural yeast, minimal SO2 addition, and...gasp...are very often dry! If you think you think all Riesilng is sweet, we beg you to stop by for a taste.

THURSDAY

July 7th

5.30PM - 8PM

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Right about now all good wine stores are sending out their Red, White, and Bubbly suggestions for the Fourth of July Weekend. Or suggesting you drink Zinfandel, a quintessentially American grape (although don't tell the Croatians - they'll debate you on this!) I'm going to be a bit independent and just suggest a few favorite bottles that have recently hit the shelves. If none of them set off your firecrackers, there's always our $150 Summer Sampler Case!.

WINE YOU NEVER KNEW YOU NEEDED: MALBEC....FROM FRANCE

Domaine Pepiere (Marc Ollivier) « La Pepie » Côt 2010 (Vin de Pays du Jardin de La France, Loire Valley, France)

La Pepie CotMalbec does not always = Argentina.  Its original home is in the Cahors region, in the Southwest of France, where it makes for a deep, dark, earthy wine.  But it also can be found in the Loire Valley, where it goes by the name Côt. (Who knows why...just go with it.) It's much cooler in this part of France than it is in Cahors or Argentina, so the resulting wine is fresh and light with bright purple-plumy fruit. You can even drink it with a little chill. But it's still a great match with meat - grilled burgers, grilled steaks, pretty much grilled anything.

THE BUTTE IS BACK!

Les Clos De Tue Boeuf La Butte Gamay 2010 1.5 Liter Magnum (Touraine, Loire, France)

la ButteI love this wine...and not just because of the endless stream of "butte" jokes I can make about it. I first had it last year at Ten Bells, bastions of vin natural, and it was so crazy good that I spent most of the night ignoring my husband and friends while trying to keep the bottle very close to my glass. It was just bright and good and fruity and slightly funky and everything that is best about natural wines. This vintage, I managed to snag some larger-format magnum bottles which means...wait for it....I like big buttes! Pick up a (big) bottle and just think of all the fun you too can have making butte jokes at your upcoming Fourth of July celebrations! If you're intrigued, hurry up and grab one because there are only 12 in stock....well, 11 after I snag one for myself.

Price: $39.99 (easy magnum math = $19.99/regular size bottle)

MUSCAT LOVE*

Vi D'Agulla aVinYo 2010 (Penedes, Spain)

avinyoIn my imagination, I own a wine store with an entire wall devoted to dry and nearly-dry wines made from the usually-sweet Muscat grape. But my store exists in the real world, so I have to restrain my Muscat-loving self and stick to just a few bottles. This is one that just arrived: a slightly spritzy, very refreshing, and very dry version from Spain. It has that pretty floral, almost grapey thing that I love about Muscat. But it finishes clean and dry and leaves you wanting more. And it's just 10.5% abv, so you can drink more - a lot more!

Price: $14.99  Click here to learn more and buy.
