JURA JUBILEE & MUSAR MADNESS
al-lit-er-a-tion
[uh-lit-uh-rey-shuhn] noun
 1) the occurance of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
2) what this newsletter writer resorts to when she can't come up with a sufficiently clever email title.
Cheesy literary devices aside, Chateau Musar and wines from the Jura region are two of my favorite things, ranking way above raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens.

JURA JUBILEE!
Thursday, April 22nd (Yes, that's TODAY)
6.00pm - 7.30pm
We'll be completely honest. This week's tasting is as much for us as it is for you. I love Jura wines and am always looking for an excuse to crack one...or more...open.
So....the Jura? Located just west of Switzerland, it's easily one of the most isolated wine regions in France. And that isolation plays a part in the uniqueness of the region's wines. This is a land of grapes you've never heard of (Melon a Queue Rouge?), italicized wine styles you've never tasted ( sous-voile? vin jaune?), and oddly shaped bottles with strange fill sizes (a 620ml clavelin?)
Jura reds are currently the height of wine geek chic. Made from obscure grapes like Poulsard and Trousseau, they have the quality of being a hit among both the more-obscure-the-better set and regular wine drinkers (like my mom.)
Jura whites are a little more polarizing on first sip. They're often made in a purposely oxidized style (or sous-voile in italics) which gives them a distinct twang, similar to a whiff of fino sherry. They offer up a combination of flavors and styles you won't find anywhere outside the Jura - spice, nuts, intense minerality + that defining Jura twang. Hard to describe but delish to taste, which we'll be doing.
On hand will be three whites from Jacques Puffeney, one of the region's most beloved producers. Tasted together, they're an excellent gateway to the region's uniquely intense vin jaune (which won't be open - but is in stock should you be so inclined.)
Puffeney Melon a Queue Rouge 2005 (a.k.a. Chardonnay outside the Jura) - $25.99 Puffeney Cuvee Sacha 2005 (a blend of Chardonnay and Savagnin) - $27.99 Puffeney Savagnin 2005 (sort of a baby vin jaune) - $32.99
So come on by. Or maybe don't - that way, there's more for us! (Seriously though, come by and try.) |
MUSAR MADNESS
Chateau Musar - the story is the stuff of legends: Winery and vineyards located in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Founded in the 1930's with wine produced with nearly every harvest despite battles waged among the vines. Cellars that served as bomb shelters in the 80's. Certain vintages that taste of gunpowder.
Musar reds are a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan and a few other grapes. The mix changes every year depending on the whims of winemaker Serge Hochar. Some years it's compared to Bordeaux, in some, to Burgundy, in others, to Chateauneuf du Pape. These wines last practically forever, and constantly evolve into a mix of exotic spices, stunningly vibrant fruit (even in the older wines), earthy, gamey, meatiness - and perhaps even a hint of gunpowder.
The whites, in their early days, are somewhat similar to traditional white Rioja,. Made from Obeideh and Merwah (two grapes rumored to be the ancestors of Chardonnay and Semillon), they develop exotic, almost other-worldly spices as they age and somehow manage to outlast even the reds.
Musar is a classic example of wine that you want to keep tasting as it evolves. A bottle this year, a bottle next year, and so on as you grow older together.
Or...take a short-cut method and buy a ready-made Musar sampler pack, which includes:
- 2 bottles 1999 Rouge (1 for now, 1 for later) - 1 bottle 1997 Rouge (elegant, well-balanced) - 1 bottle 1994 Rouge (riper, fuller due to hot year) - 1 bottle 1991 Rouge (one of the greatest vintages of the last 20 years) - 1 bottle 2000 Blanc(because you just have to try it)
Price: $360
While not inexpensive, these mini-Musar cellars provide a rare chance to experience one of the world's most unique wines in depth - for the cost of less than one bottle of top Bordeaux.
DETAILS:
Those with good memories will recall we tried to make a similar offer over a year ago. Sadly, the wines never arrived, but happily, Chateau Musar is now working with a different distributor - one that's more adept at special orders like these.
The wines will come straight from the US importer, not the grey market. Expected arrival is in mid- to late-May. Credit card info is required to hold your order. On the off chance that the wines do not arrive by end of May, you will be credited in full. If you are interested in reserving a 6-pack, please contact Christy by email or call the store at 212.346.9544. |
