SUMMERTIME IS(N'T) REALLY OVER
Dog days of summerI keep hearing that summer is almost over.  Not true!  My kids still have nearly 3 weeks until school starts. And I doubt I'll be retiring off anytime soon.  So rather than switch the shelves over to full-bodied reds as soon as Labor Day hits, we're planning to keep things thinks light for a bit longer, in anticipation of those last few dog days.

Check out our summer's-not-over favorites below.  And our Weird but Good 3-Pack (alright, it's really a 2-Pack).  And our ever growing selection of Fancy Pants Riojas.

Hppy reading.

TRY SOME SUMMER'S-NOT-OVER-YET FAVORITES
Yes, today's weather is a little less than summery.  But you just know there are more than a few dog days ahead of us.  And unlike the wearing of white shoes, you can still drink your favorite summer wines after Labor Day.  Actually, you can still wear your white shoes...if you like white shoes to begin with, but that's another story.

Clairette de RouquefortChateau de Roquefort Blanc de Clairette 2008 (VdP des Bouches du Rhone): We fell in love with this wine when we first poured it at the Taste of Tribeca wine tour back in May.  And once we sell through our last several cases, we'll be very sad to go.  Crisp, minerally, with a citrusy, almost briny character, it's perfect for these last lazy, hazy days of summer.  We're feeling a bit nostalgic already.  End of Summer Price: $13.99  (Regular price: $14.99) Click to buy.

Ameztoi Rose RubentisAmetzoi Txakoli Rose 2008 (Getariako Txakolina, Spain): We still have a few bottles left of this amazingly unpronounceable but absolutely delicious summertime treat.  From Spain's Basque region, this is super refreshing, minerally, slightly spritzy, with just a hint of berry fruit.  End of Summer Price: $19.99 (Regular price $20.99)  Click to buy.

Bybee Bpoing Pinot Noir RoseBybee Vinearyds "B" Rose of Pinot Noir 2008 (Russian River Valley, California): A rose sourced from Russian River fruit and made with the same care as a "regular" red Pinot Noir is an unusual find.  When it costs $19.99, it's even better.  And when the distributor puts it on super-end-of-summer close-out and we can get the price down to $16.99...well, it's downright fabulous!  We'll take as much as we can get until we drain the source dry.  End of Summer Price: $16.99  (Regularl price: $19.99)  Click to buy.

STAY TUNED FOR...

WINE CLUBS: We're almost ready to launch a few great wine clubs.  Just image - Frankly Wines selections delivered to your door on a monthly basis. We'll have various options available, so watch this spot!

WEIRD BUT GOOD MONTH(S)
We may not have gotten the formal tasting calendar together, but if you've stopped in at any of our regular tastings, you'll notice something odd is in the air.  Grapes you've never heard of.  Regions that are well beyond the regular wine syllabus.  Flavors that don't fit into the usual fruity/spicy/rich/crisp categories.

Yes, it's Weird but Good Month(s) at Frankly Wines.  Throughout August and September we'll be featuring various oddies but goodies.  Some you'll like, some you won't.  But you're very likely to discover something you never knew you needed.

Dip your toe in the waters of wackiness with our current 3-Pack (which is really a 2-Pack):

2-PACK: JURA OBSCURA
The Jura is a region in the far east of France - so far east that it's practically Switzerland.  You've probably never heard of its most famous wine, vin jaune, which lasts forever and has some of the same funky, tangy nutty notes as a good sherry.  You've probably never heard of some of the region's most important grapes (Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau.)  And you've probably never had wines that taste quite like the wines in this 2-Pack.  But there's a good chance you'll like them.

Tiossot ArboisThe 2-Pack features a red and a white from Domaine Andre et Mireille Tissot, both made from grapes grown in the Arbois region of the Jura.  Many producers in this region farm biodynamically and produce wines as naturally as possible, adding nothing except possibly a very small amount of sulfur.  The Tissot husband and wife team is no exception.  If you're curious about natural wines this is a great region - and producer - to check out.

Tissot Arbois Selection 2004 (Chardonnay/Savagnin): Yes, that's Savagnin, not Sauvignon.  And you may think you know Chardonnay, but we can practically guarantee you don't know this Chardonnay.  Made in the traditional Jura style, the wine is slightly oxidized, but in a good way.  You'll get bruised apples, nutty notes, a slight sherry tang and a spine of racy acidity that keeps the wine going for days.  It actually improves if you leave it open for a couple days.  Yes, days.  It's a great match with stinky cheeses, chicken dishes, and pork chops.

Tissot Arbois Vielles Vignes 2006 (Poulsard): There's some Pinot Noir grown in the Jura, but the wine geek favorite would be the rarely-seen-elsewhere Poulsard.  This grape makes for a wine that's light in color, medium in body, but big in flavor: bright, fresh, slightly tart cherries, exotic spice, a hint of autumn underbrush, and a fresh minerality, like fresh chalky soil.  Bright acidity and surprisingly sneaky tannins give the wine some structure.  Best with a very slight chill, it's a wine that can pair with a surprisng variety of foods, but duck with cherry glaze or lamb rubbed in fresh herbs might be just about perfecct.

PRICING: $35.99 (regular price $39.98)  Click to buy.
FANCY PANTS WINES: Old School Rioja, Vintage Stock
One of the obvious pleasures of running a wine store is that you get to buy a lot of wine. This is also one of the great dangers of owning a wine store. The "one for the store, one for me" phenomenon doesn't make my accountant very happy, especially when it comes to traditional old-school Rioja.

I have a weakness for these wines, which seem to age endlessly, gaining a leathery, tea-leafy complexity as the primary notes fade into a haunting whiff of exotic spices and ghostly fruits. I could go on, but you might start to laugh. (You're probably already laughing.)

Lopez de Heredia RiojaA recent piece in the New York Times inspired me to go public with the semi-secret goodies stashed in the cooler downstairs.  If you haven't already read it, Eric Asimov's piece discusses the region's return to its roots, with the wonderfully traditional wines of Lopez de Heredia as the lone example of a winery that never lost them.  A few other wineries are also highlighted, including some Frankly Wines favorites.

If you're at all intrigued by these wines, have a look at the list below to see what's on hand (at this moment at least.)  These wines aren't inexpensive, but they're some of the last relative bargains in the wine world - top-notch producers, bottled aged at the source, in most cases for less than $100.  If you're looking for an excuse to stop crimping, these wines are all worthy splurges. .
