This Week At Frankly Wines
Very busy here at Frankly Wines! The airconditioner is humming, the solar shades are keeping out the morning sun, and the basement storage space is almost completed - which means we'll soon have room for even more wine. We took part in the Taste of Tribeca Wine Tasting Tour and if you haven't noticed, there's a very pregnant woman behind the counter who's due any day - this Monday to be specific.
Very busy...very busy...but never to busy to show you some fun, new wines or remind you of some old favorites. | |

This Week's 3-Bottle Sample Pack |
|
We firmly believe the best way to learn about wine is to just drink it. So each week we put together a different "3-Pack", often featuring 3 wines from different regions, but made from similar grapes.
Tasting notes are included to give you some idea of how wine geeks would distinguish between the three wines. But the main idea is for you to crack them open, give them a try, and get a better sense of what you like and why.
Great Summer Whites You've Probably Never Heard Of
Be ahead of the curve and check out three great summer wines that aren't exactly mainstream. What they all have in common (aside from the semi-unpronounceable names) is bright, crisp acidity. "Acidity" may not sound desirable in a wine, but it's a very good thing - it makes your mouth water and gets you ready for another sip. Pick up this 3-Pack and give it a try - proper pronunciation is optional.
Crios Torrontes 2006 (Salta, Argentina): Torrontes is quickly becoming Argentina's star white grape. Give it a sniff and you'll get a nose full of citrus, white flowers, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it's crisp, yet full-bodied. It's always a crowd pleaser, so introduce your friends - they'll thank you for it. Regular price: $16.99
Dr. Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli 2006 (Finger Lakes, New York): Impress your friends when you actually know how to pronounce the Rkatsiteli grape. (It's r-kat-si-telly). Impress them again when they try this unique, intense, racy wine - limes, minerals, stone fruits, a mild spiciness and some floral notes. Regular price: $21.99
Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina 2007 (Txacoli, Spain): This one's from the Basque region, where x's and z's roam free. Txacoli is both the region and the style - it's bone dry, with notes of citrus peel, tart Granny Smith apples, minerals, a bit of nuttiness, and a hint of effervescence to keep things lively. Fantastic with shellfish and salty snacks Regular price: $19.99
Special 3-Pack Pricing: $51.99 (regular price $58.97)

Barbieri Syrah "Colson Canyon" (Santa Barbara, California): Big, beautiful Syrah from the sommeliers at the big, beautiful Wynn hotel in Las Vegas. Only 60 bottles of this wine in NY - and we laid our hands on a few of them. Multi-layered is the only way to describe it: dried herbs, floral, violet notes, chocolate, leather, dark fruits, fine grained tannins. Open a bottle up and it will keep you entertained for days. Price: $47.99
Barnett Cabernet Sauvignon "Spring Mountain District" 2004 (Napa, California): Shhh...don't tell...but we've brought in a few cases of this under-cover cult cab. It may not (yet) be as screamingly famous as Screaming Eagle, but it's a fracton of the price and fans of this family-owned winery will insist it's every bit as good. Napa fruit doesn't get any better than Sping Mountain fruit, which is what you'll find in this bottle. The 2005 (which we'll be getting soon) is made for aging, but this 2004 is drinking quite well right now. Price: $58.99
No. 1 Family Estate "Cuvee No. 1" Sparkling Wine NV (Marlborough, New Zealand): You'll have to trust us on this one. Yes, it's a sparkling wine from New Zealand. But it's made by a Frenchman using the same techniques and grapes as in Champagne. And as Champagne prices climb higher and higher, this is a relative bargain. 100% Chardonnay, Cuvee No. 1 has the elegance, racy acidity, tiny, long-lasting bubbles, and biscuty-yeastiness that Champagne-lovers crave. Trust us - it's worth a try. Price: $42.99
Santa Julia Organica Malbec and Chardonnay (Mendoza, Argentina): Bottle of red, bottle of white. Both made with organically grown grapes. Both "unoaked" meaning the pure, fresh flavors of the fruit shine through. Perfect for summer sipping. Price: $10.99 |

ROSS SUGGESTS: J. Mourat Collection 2006 (Fiefs Vendeens, France) - (editor's note: wacky blend alert!) Soft red fruit = classic Pinot Noir. Plus fresh herbal notes from the Cabernet Franc. Plus rose petal aromas from the Negrette grape. They all come together in this Loire Valley blend that's ideal for the summer. Price: $13.99
KARIA SUGGESTS: Terrazas Reserva Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) - Standout Malbec at a great price point. This wine has smooth tannins and is more earthy than one might expect from an Argentine Malbec, but there's no shortage of red and dark fruit flavors. I would pair this wine with a hearty burger or a meaty pizza. Price: $19.99
NICK SUGGESTS: Chateau Villa Bel-Air 2004 (Graves, France) If hit-you-over-the head California whites aren't for you, try this refined white Boredeaux. With subtle notes of vanilla and citrus, this Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend reminds me of the subtlety and complexity you get in much more expensive aged French wines. It will pair with most fish and chicken dishes, or with a nice soft French cheese. if you're like me, you'll enjoy it on it's own as well. Enjoy! Price: $21.99 |

Feeling flush? Looking for something special? Let us suggest the following:
Ceretto Bricco Rocche Barolo Prapo 1999 (Barolo, Piedmont, Italy)
Not exactly a barbecue wine, but it's always a good time for a good Barolo. This is an elegant, old-school Barolo which is entering its "drinkable" phase right about now. It has all the classic hallmarks of the region: roses, cherries, tar, and a subtle anise aroma that to my nose, says "Barolo". And the gorgeous tannins (wine geek alert) - aged Nebbiolo, the grape used to make Barolo, has a tannic structure like no other grape - firm and powerful, yet elegant and supremely refined.
Barolo is a dangerous habit - so stay away from this wine if you don't want to acquire it!
