This Week's 3-Bottle Sample Pack

We firmly believe the best way to learn about wine is to just drink it.  So each week we'll put together a different "3-Pack", usually featuring 3 wines from different regions, but made from similar grapes.

Tasting notes are included to give you some idea of how wine geeks would distinguish between the three wines.  But the main idea is for you to crack them open, give them a try, and get a better sense of what you like and why.

A Tale of Three Malbecs
The Malbec grape and Argentina are proving to be one of the wine world's greatest matches.  But many people don't realize the grape first found it's home in the Cahor region of France.  This 3-Pack features the grape in three very different incarnations - 1) highly gulpable 2) polished and refined 3) old school French

Punta Pays Malbec 2005 (Mendoza, Argentina):  A highly gulpable verision of Malbec - black fruits, plums, a hint of smokiness, but nothing too serious to get in the way of easy-drinking goodness.  Regular price: $9.99

Terrazas Reserva Malbec 2005 (Mendoza, Argentina): This version also has classic black fruits, plums, smokiness, and some notes of violet. It's more intense and has some additional toasty notes from time aging in oak.  Polished, refined, and great with grilled beef or lamb (it is from Argentina!)  Regular price: $19.99

Chateau la Caminade "La Commandery" 2005 (Cahors, France): Malbec from its original home in Southwest France, where its known as Cot Noir or Auxerrios (don't even try to pronounce it.)  Inky black, with brambly dark fruits, a pleasantly salty character and a long, chewy finish.  Excellent with meats, game, mushrooms, and cheeses.    Regular price: $19.99

Special 3-Pack Pricing: $47.99 (regular price $54.97)

In-Store Tastings
wine tasting geeksWe're starting to pop open bottles for in-store tastings.  It's still not a fancy, formal program, but stop by Friday or Saturday evenings after 5pm and there's a good chance we'll have something open.  Some day soon we'll be organized enough to let you know in advance what we're planning to pour, but for now, think of our tastings as one of life's happy surprises.
Staff Picks
Parker Terra RossaROSS SUGGESTS: Parker Terra Rossa Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 (Coonawarra, Australia) - 'Terra Rossa' refers to a long, narrow strip of red crumbly soil that's slightly smaller than Manhattan.  This bit of land grows some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in all Australia.  The result is Old World style with New World nuances (You can ask Ross what he means by that.)  Subtle black fruit balanced with gentle yet noticable tannins and a great, long finish.  Price:$32.99

cahorsKARIA SUGGESTS: Dr. Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli 2006 (Finger Lakes, New York) - Though the Rkatsiteli (r-cat-si-telly) grape is not a cross between riesling and gewurztraminer, it certainly does taste like it. It's spicy and aromatic with lots of green fruit and stone fruit.  This unique wine has good acidity and just a faint bit of sweetness.  Price: $22.99

NICK SUGGESTS
:
Nick is on holiday.  All month.  Drinking wine.  Really terrible thing, to be Nick.
Fancy Pants Wine
Feeling flush?  Looking for something special?  Let us suggest the following:

Cheval des Andes 2004 (Mendoza, Argentina)
A joint venture between Terrazas de los Andres and Chateau Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion's cheval des andesPremier Grand Cru.  Winemaking is overseen by Pierre Lurton, who also manages Chateau d'Yquem in Bordeaux's Sauterns region.

The wine is described as a "New World Grand Cru", but whatever it's called, it's good stuff.  A blend of Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and a bit of Petit Verdot, it offers up black cherry, black currant, violets, spices, with full body, intense flavors, and great length.  The label also sports a white "cheval" hidden among the Andes - can you spot it in the image above?

Very drinkable now, this wine can also age 5 - 10 years.

Price: $79.99
New to the Shelves
Ombra 2004 (Montsant, Spain):  A soft, ripe, red fruit-driven blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan grapes. From one of Spain's up-and-coming regions.
Price: $17.99

Nell Chardonnay 2006(Victoria, Australia):  Chardonnay for people who don't like Chardonnay - crisp green apples, zippy lime, and just a touch of creamy toastiness. Price: $11.99
