| Frankly Wines Newsletter
Week of March 17th, 2008 |
Spring is in the air! Or at least rain is in the air, or sometimes snow...in any case, it's definitely March.
We've been doing some spring cleaning here and have spruced up the newsletter with a snazzy new look! But don't fear - the quirky commentary hasn't changed one bit. | |

Frankly Wines in the New York Sun
On March 5th, Peter Hellman's column in the New York Sun featured none other than the "new and tiny" Frankly Wines. While we may be a little biased, we think it's a great article, although "tiny" may be a bit of an overstatement. Check out the article here.

Our Newest Arrivals - Actual Employees!
As much as I love love love working 7 days a week, it was finally time to get some help. Karia, Ross, and Nick have all joined the team as of last week. They have all studied at the International Wine Center and are ready, willing, and able to help you with your wine selections. (But please be kind to them as they learn how to work the quirky cash register.) |

This Week's 3-Bottle Sample Pack
|
|
|
This week we're featuring two sampler packs - 1 red, 1 white. This is the red one.
Que Syrah Shiraz
OK, the name is more than a little cheesy, but it was tough to resist because this pack features three very different examples of the Syrah grape (aka the Shiraz grape.) Two names = twice the fun, or in this pack, three times the fun.
Green Point Shiraz 2005 (Victoria, Australia): From one of the coolest regions in Australia, this wine is worlds away from typical Aussie fruit bombs. A good example of "cool climate" Shiraz, it offers bright, fresh, vibrant red fruits with a touch of sweet spice and crisp acidity. Regular price: $19.99
Burch Hall Syrah 2004 (Sierra Foothills, California): A little less fruit-forward than the Green Point, this Cali syrah is clean and elegant with notes of red cherries and a bit of peppery spice. Regular price: $22.99
Charles Cimicky Trumps Shiraz 2006 (Barossa Valley, Australia): Classic Barossa Shiraz - big, brooding, loads of spice, some toasty oak, a rich earthiness and a smooth, velvety finish. The world "elegant" may not leap to mind, but this is yummy stuff. Regular price: $19.99
Special 3-Pack Pricing: $62.97 (regular price $51.99)

And here's the white one....
Chenin Blanc -
A Grape of Many Flavors
Chenin Blanc is the rare grape variety that can do crisp and refreshing, rich and full-bodied or the whole spectrum of off-dry to sweet and luscious. In this pack, you can taste for yourself - one grape, three wildly different wines.
Teddy Hall Chenin Blanc 2007 (Stellenbosch, South Africa): This expression of Chenin is dry, crisp, and refreshing, with zesty notes of lemon peel. Highly drinkable and perfect for summer. Regular price: $11.99
La Noblaie Les Chiens-Chiens 200X (Chinon, Loire, France): White wine from the Loire's Chinon region is a rare find, but this one is definitely not for the dogs-dogs (chiens = dogs). A total contrast to the Teddy Hall, this version of Chenin is dry, yet richer and fuller. Notes of citrus, honey, and a finish that will remind you of popcorn - toasty, slightly oily - hard to describe, but definitely yummy. Regular price: $27.99
Domaine Pichot - Domaine Le Peu de la Moriette 2006 (Vouvray, Loire, France): Chenin Blanc in its off-dry expression. Slightly sweet, with notes of hints of honey, candied fruit. The hint of citrus peel on the finish keeps it clean, crisp, and surprisingly refreshing. Regular price: $13.99
Special 3-Pack Pricing: $44.99 (regular price $53.97)

| Fancy Pants Wine |
|
|
Our last newsletter mentioned a number of higher end "fancy pants" wines you can find in the shop. The item received good feedback (probably because people like the highly technical term "fancy pants"), so we've decided to highlight a special wine each week. Our first is...
Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir 2006 (Walker Bay, South Africa)
Hamilton Russell winery and vineyards are located
in Walker Bay, one of the southernmost wine-growing subregions in South Africa. Because it's quite cool there, Pinot Noir does very well and Hamilton Russell makes a great one - possibly the country's best.
The wine has a lovely nose of dark red cherries, raspberries, and a smokiness that adds an extra bit of complexity. That smokiness comes through on the palate, along with dark red fruits and a nice earthiness. Tannins are find-grained and just present enough to add some structure and elegance. Yummy stuff and at $33.99, it's a relative bargain for a chance to taste one of the very best Pinot Noirs coming out of South Africa today.
