Purging the Excess From your Closet

When I bought my house it took me five years to finally rip out the wire shelving and install a good quality closet system. Finally, my closet problem was solved.

Then one  day I woke up and couldn't find anything. I had to shuffle through piles of stuff crammed into my shelves; getting dressed in the morning had become an ordeal! And my neat, orderly closet was an unsightly mess. I'm embarrassed that it took so long to catch on to the problem. Especially since I have advised clients for years about the pitfall of this very issue. What I discovered was that I was digging through the same stuff every day to find the clothes I wanted to wear. Stuff like old jeans with holes in the knees that I thought would be useful for painting or really dirty jobs, but went unworn for years. There was stuff that didn't fit, or that I didn't like to wear but seemed too good to throw away, oh... and one huge pile of stuff that I thought might fit again some day. Get the picture.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Time to purge! Oh, yeah. I cleaned three large garbage bags of junk from a six-foot reach-in closet. What a feeling when that job got done. Now my jeans and sweaters and pajamas are all in their place. I'm finding things I enjoy wearing that had been buried out of sight. And it feels so good to reach in to just the right place and find what I am looking for.

Tips for Keeping Your Closet Organized:

Purge your closet at least once a year. (January 1st is a great time!)
  • If it doesn't fit, get rid of it.
  • If you haven't worn an item in a year, get rid of it.
  • Get rid of wire hangers and replace with wood or trim non-slip hangers.
  • If you find it emotionally difficult to let go of old clothing, seek  the help of a    professional organizer. (NAPO)They specialize in helping folks just like you.
  • Organization is really about your quality of life.

Closet Doors: The First Step to an Organized Closet
pocket Doors Are a Great SolutionThe wrong door can make even the best organized closet difficult to use. The key to choosing the right door is to consider how the style and swing of the door impacts your access to the clothing in your closet. The door style is often chosen by the builder who may not be thinking about the details of your closet system in the rush to complete a new home. If you are building or remodeling, think carefully about your closet doors in the planning stages. And if you are stuck with a less than ideal closet door,  it's not hard to install a new door. Most doors, regardless of their style fit in the same size rough opening. It may be worth the expense to eliminate a daily source of aggravation by changing your door style.
