Greetings!

Happy New Year!

The great thing about January is that each day is getting longer.

January is also National Get Organized Month. I think that "Getting Organized" is close to the top of the most popular resolutions right behind losing weight. I know for sure that the closer you get to the top, the more treacherous the conditions. The air can get pretty darn thin up there near the top. The slope gets steep and slippery. The next thing you know, your feet are churning to keep hold and your  arms are flailing at the air for balance.

Me, I'm playing it safe this year and staying close to the ground. I'm making a resolution to read more. Yeah, spread a big old pile of paperbacks around the living room, set a bowl of chips and a cola on the coffee table and the heck with the scale and the new filing system. I'm gonna dive into an Elmore Leonard Crime novel or two. "Get Shorty" and "Be Cool."

In the meantime, if your goals are higher up the list than mine it's a great time to get organized. Prices are down and we've got lots of new products.

Have a great winter!

Best wishes,
Bill Huntley

Hiring a Contractor II

So, you've decided to tackle one of those home remodeling projects you've been thinking about. Now what? Who do you call? You want the best result possible, right? The perfect design, quality materials, the best price, great service... how do you insure that you get what you want? What is the most important question to ask your closet company---or flooring installer, or remodeling contractor, or anyone else you are going to hand a large hunk of your hard earned cash.

Let me tell you about a recent experience I had with my main supplier of components.

We signed a contract with a customer and made a commitment to get the job installed before Christmas, 2008. Christmas Eve was Wednesday, so we scheduled the job for first thing that Monday. The only problem with our plan was that in spite of tracking info that told us our delivery was on schedule, UPS only had half of the shipment on Monday morning. Apparently UPS gets busy during the holiday season (!) and the rest of our order was still in transit.

Okay, so we pick it up first thing in the morning and still have two days to get the job done.

Tuesday morning things were looking great. I showed up at the job site with all of the necessary components to complete the octagonal closet, two experienced installers, and plenty of time.

Or so I thought.

I opened one after the other long boxes in disbelief. All of the tall vertical panels shipped to us were the wrong size. The label on each of the boxes listed the correct size, but the actual component inside was the wrong width!

We immediately called the supplier to ask if we could get replacement parts shipped to us overnight. No. We were told this would be cost prohibitive with such large parcels. The earliest they could get replacements to us would be next Tuesday.

Well, what to do. Denise took it up a notch to someone at the management level with our supplier. Here's what she said to Denise: "Before you say anything-I feel terrible about this. I'm working on it. Let me call you right back.

In less than one hour the required parts were manufactured, packed, and on a truck headed north! Could I drive south and meet their man half way?

You bet I could!

Wednesday, Christmas Eve at four-thirty, we had the closet installed and a happy customer. My supplier had an ecstatic customer.

Ask anyone in business: no matter how good your system is, stuff happens, mistakes are made, plans go wrong. So the question I ask when I look at the businesses that I do business with is: "What happens when some thing goes wrong?" This gets down to the core values of a business. How far will they go to stand behind the quality of their products and service.

What it boils down to for me is when I lay down my money, what sort of commitment can I count on in return?

It's all about you and me the customer, pure and simple.
