As you take office, many challenges confront you. The financial crisis and global uncertainty will tempt many to recommend reduced spending and savings on such traditionally unpopular programs as "foreign aid". Don't be fooled.
At a fraction of 1% of total spending, the foreign assistance budget is not the difference between solvency and debt here in the U.S. It is however the difference between life and death for many millions of poor and vulnerable people around the world. Read the letter... |

Beating Malaria: 1 Million Nets Distributed in Southern Sudan |
|
In May 2008, the Government of Southern Sudan, PSI and other partners launched a malaria campaign to deliver one million long-lasting insecticidal mosquito nets across two states. They overcame tremendous challenges to reach every family in these rural, malaria-endemic areas. On July 31, the campaign delivered its one millionth net.

| Cholera Outbreak: PSI, UNICEF Respond Quickly in Zimbabwe
|
After receiving an urgent call from UNICEF Zimbabwe with news of a cholera outbreak in a low-income, densely populated area near Harare, PSI/Zimbabwe quickly mobilized to distribute point-of-use water treatment tablets and conduct hygiene promotion activities.
Within three days, over 300,000 tablets were distributed through retail outlets and over 400 households received home-based water treatment education.

YouthAIDS: The Power of Music |
PSI's YouthAIDS recently held its Sixth Annual Gala to celebrate the power of music in reaching vulnerable populations.
The charity event raised $1.2 million for PSI's HIV programs around the globe.
Actors Tina Fey, Kristin Bell, Dennis Quaid and others joined together to record a message for YouthAIDS at a recent event in Los Angeles.
