Growth - A Humbling Challenge

Midway through my second year as CEO, I've had the opportunity to travel to many of our PSI platforms and see our dedicated staff serve people most in need. We are at an exhilarating time of rapid growth.  After a flat 2007 when revenues and health impact did not appreciably grow, PSI is poised to return to substantial growth in 2008. Since growth for us translates into greater health impact and greater empowerment of our poor and vulnerable clients around the world, this is humbling good news for us.  But it is also a challenge.

Group Receives U.N. Award for HIV Work 

Red RibbonSanghamitra, a group of female sex workers supported by PSI in Mumbai, India, has received a prestigious 2008 Red Ribbon Award from the United Nations. The award honors outstanding community efforts to reduce the spread and impact of HIV/AIDS.

Angola Survey Shows Lack of Water Treatment
Angola water
A PSI survey of Angolan households shows that fewer than half of caregivers always treat water with a reliable method before giving it to children. PSI is working in partnership with the Angolan Health Ministry on its Safe Water Programme to distribute the water treatment product, Certeza, to households in cholera-risk areas.

Ashley Judd Speaks Out Against Sex Trafficking

Actress and PSI Board Member Ashley Judd spoke out against sex trafficking at a United Nations conference in June. "I know that the unheard are helped when they are heard...and my goal was to help the U.N. help them," she said at a press conference.

PSI Appoints New CTO
Steven-Chapman
PSI recently appointed Dr. Steven Chapman as its chief technical officer. Chapman is one of the pioneers of PSI's social marketing approach, starting with our organization in 1989 when we had programs in only five countries and worked only in family planning and HIV.

PSI began working on HIV prevention activities in Mozambique in 1994. In 2007, PSI/Mozambique estimates that it averted over 54,000 unwanted pregnancies, more than 219,000 episodes of diarrhea and more than 1.4 million cases of malaria.
