Some Family Lazarus News

David is now recovering nicely from his back surgery after a few difficult weeks. The doctors are pleased with the results and he should be back to work in a few weeks.

Thanks so much to all of you who showed support with many cards, letters and prayers for David during this difficult time. How important it is to stand with one another in our hour of need.

Michaella is enjoying her new flute playing concerts and teaching music. She is also encouraging some of our Russian New Immigrants to use their wonderful musical talents. She will be
accompanying a new talent for a concert audition at the Tel-Aviv Cultural Center next week.

Our oldest son Joshua aged 23 is committing his life to serving the God of our fathers and his Messiah this Shabbat at a special service.

We expect a large number of his friends from all over the country to attend this special time of dedication for this extraordinary young man.

Joshua has been chosen to be promoted in the army to platoon commander and
begins an intense 2-month training program next week. The course includes training in the ethics, morals and decision-making principles in leadership. They will also be examining the recent wars in Gaza and Lebanon to learn lessons for future preparation.

During the final week of the course these young officers travel to Auschwitz to witness the holocaust and learn from our tragic history.

Moriel our 22-year-old daughter plans to attend the Shenkar School of Design in Tel-Aviv this year. The four-year program at this highly competitive school promises to keep her close to home for a while!

Hadass our 21-year-old daughter has started her own music performance and recording business in Jaffa not far from our home at Beit Immanuel. And where do you think she comes when she gets hungry?

Elisha our youngest son is in the 11th grade doing his matriculation exams. He finally seems to have accepted the fact that he must still go to school!

On any given day of the week you can find her picking up needy people to help with shopping, taking the children of single parent moms to the doctor, hauling building materials to fix a leaking roof, assisting elderly to get to the congregation, picking up friends at the airport or taking the youth to a prayer meeting.

Recently, she has been acting up with gear problems and just yesterday someone broke in and tried to take her away from us! She resisted well, but did suffer some damage.

In order to properly care for our dearly beloved buggy we need some financial help. If you can help please e-mail us here:

A Nation Elected
Recent elections in Israel reveal that our people  are tired of war and terror. A majority sense that a strong right-wing uncompromising stance is the best  policy. Time will tell.
In this land where everything pulls us to one side or another there are plenty of reasons to get angry, take revenge or join one radical side or another. There are lots of opportunities to eat those "sour grapes" (Ezek. 18:1-4).  The troubles of life can make us bitter but we must take heed as we learn from the lesson of Cain.
   Gen. 4:3-15
Cain and Abel grew up in a simple world where there was not a lot of trouble. There were not many enemies, pressures or temptations. Yet even in this safe environment jealousy grew in Cain's heart. He thought that by getting rid of Abel his life would be better. He blamed Abel for his own problems and look what resulted from his bitterness.
He begins to lie (vs 9). Cain's heart is not right. He cannot face the truth. He has enslaved himself to his own anger.
The deceptions of his heart soon become known to all (vs 10). He tries to carry on with business as usual but he cannot hide from the emotions that have latched onto his heart.
His bitterness and anger eventually make him a lonely wanderer (vs 11-12). He loses his home, his family and friends. His fellowship and intimacy have turned to bitterness, anger and revenge.
Cain was a tiller of the soil and the ground was the place in which he took pride. It was here that he was gifted and from here he brought his sacrifices to God. Even his land was now cursed with the fruit of his jealousy and anger (vs 12). He could no longer do the very things that he had been gifted by God to do.
Messiah came to reverse the curse. By accepting God's will for his life and not becoming bitter in the face of suffering He broke the cycle of hatred to become the perfect sacrifice.
And so is Israel's true election. It is a call to keep faith against all odds. It is a destiny that has not been easy. Our struggle for survival is a daily battle on every front. But the real battle is preserving the image of God in man and not losing our souls to vengeance, hatred and extremism.
Messiah taught us that in these troubled times "the love of many would grow cold."  That is the real choice we must make. To continue to love the Lord our God and not lose hope. To keep our hearts upright in the face of the darkness and despair that is pressing in on every front.
This is our true election. May God bless Israel.
1809 - CMJ - 2009

For 200 years CMJ has been investing in the spiritual rebirth of the Jewish people. This May 17-28, 2009 CMJ is hosting an exciting Bicentennial Tour in Israel.

Shoresh Study Tours would like to invite you to join a special study tour of the Land of Israel led by historian Kelvin Crombie. The tour will include bicentennial celebrations at CMJs four ministry centers in Israel, meeting the Directors and staff of CMJ, talks by local historians, barbeque meals, and other special programs.

It is a Journey through Time, Via the Path of God's Promises. You will travel from the Negev to the Upper Galilee and look at how God's covenant promise of the Land of Israel to the Abrahams descendants has been fulfilled in Biblical and modern times. Our studies will take us on an historical journey beginning with the wanderings of the Patriarchs, covering the waves of exile from the Land and leading all the way up to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. We will examine how the geo-political realities of the ancient Middle East shaped and influenced the Bible and its theology.
