Take a Walk Through the School!
From Jennifer Heinze
April 30, 2009
Hello, friends!
Once again, it's time for me to offer you a view from my chair, the best seat in the house!   WHY is it the best?   Because I am able to take a walk through each class in the school to witness the fabulous  activities that happen EVERY DAY at Saint Paul Lutheran School!

Thanks to all of you who love and support Saint Paul Lutheran School, and the kids, teachers, and loving volunteer helpers who  make this such a great place to learn and grow!

CONGRATULATIONS, Miss Neumann!
On Sunday, May 3, Miss Amy Neumann will receive the Lutheran Education Association's Distinguished Lutheran Early Childhood Educator Award!  There's no more deserving person for this honor than Miss Neumann!  She started her career here at Saint Paul as a student teacher in 1994.  Knowing a good thing when we saw it, Saint Paul School hired her to teach the very next school year!  After a brief time away from Saint Paul where she served as the Director of Concordia University's Preschool Center, Miss Neumann returned in 2000.  An innovative PreK teacher, she also helps the next generation of teachers develop their skills by serving as an Adjunct Professor in Triton College's Early Childhood Education Program.  Miss Neumann is truly a beloved teacher of children and adults, and we congratulate her on this prestigious award!

Michelangelo Visits Saint Paul School!
Earlier this month, students in 1st through 8th grade had a fantastic day of art, history, confidence-building, (and some gymnastics for balance!) when Michelangelo visited our gym!  Using drama, music, video, and props (such as the 30-foot scaffold on which he recreated some of the artist's works), Scott Shepherd, the founder of Strokes of Genius, presented "Through the Eyes of Michelangelo," an interactive assembly which almost defies description!

From the Website description of the presentation: Strokes of Genius presents dramatic, humorous, and authentic portrayals of masterpiece makers, providing insight into their lives, their times, and their ways of looking at art and the world they lived in. http://www.strokesofgenius.com/

Students were captivated for over an hour as the actor portrayed Michelangelo in a very energetic performance, and also invited pre-selected students (who arrived early for school to rehearse) to re-create famous works of art!

Last year, the same actor brought us Leonardo da Vinci; this year, Michelangelo.  Next year...you'll just have to wait and see!

All the best,
Jennifer Heinze

WHOOOSH!
That amazing gust of air you may have felt at about 8pm on April 16th may have been the result of the collective SIGH OF RELIEF from Junior High students after this year's Academic Fair.  The culmination of three months of work, many trips to the library, notecards aplenty, and numerous revisions, PLUS speech practice and a multi-genre display--THAT'S the Academic Fair!  Students work hard, hard, HARD to put their best forward in written form (the research paper, complete with internal citations, works cited page, and proper APA form) backed up by a visual/audio-visual display, and a speech presentation.  WOW! Judges from neighboring schools and firms arrived to listen to presentations and were very constructive and encouraging.

Each year seems better than the last, and students build on their experience so that, by 8th grade, there are some very sophisticated projects.  THANK YOU to Mrs. Ransdell who sets the bar high!  All this work does not go unnoticed at the next level, as our students are well-equipped and routinely commended on their writing skills when they enter high school.  Congratulations on your fine work!

Countdown to Chicks!
One of the highlights of every spring in preschool is the delivery of the incubators, and the chicken eggs, which we acquire through the University of Illinois Extension program.  Kids count down (im)-patiently for 21 days and then--POP!  A chicken-induced frenzy ensues!  Kids get to watch the chicks grow for a few days before they go back to the farm.  Stay tuned to this space for pics of the new chicks!

The track season is in full swing, and the Comets have made their mark!  Students in grades 3-8 have participated RAIN or SHINE (actually, a lot of RAIN...) in running and field events with other schools in the Northwest Suburban Lutheran Conference.  Our studetns will participate in two more track meets, and those who quality will enter State competition.  STAY TUNED!

Adopt-A-Pilot

Pilot Amy

During the month of April, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders had some high flying adventures by adopting their very own pilot!  Through a program sponsored by Southwest Airlines, Pilot Amy Williams, mom of a Saint Paul student,  a graduate of Saint Paul herself, came into the classrooms once a week and worked with the students on a variety of hands-on projects. Homework related to the following week's lesson was assigned each session by Pilot Amy.

Students also tracked their pilot's flights while she was on duty to figure out how many miles she'd flown. Pilot Amy flew 21,228 miles during the course of her time with us! During this portion of the program, the students used geography and math skills, matched airport codes to cities, and learned how to read a mileage chart.  THANKS, Pilot Amy!

TAKING CARE OF GOD'S EARTH:
Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

Art 2nd Grade
The 2nd Graders have taken recycling to an artistic level!  "Temporary Art" was the goal this week as all the students worked in groups to fashion free-form sculpture from a variety of every day material!

This activity was the culmination of a unit begun on Earth Day which focused on good stewardship of God's Earth.  At the end of the project, photos of each project preserved the memories of the fun, and the projects were dismantled so that the materials could be put to other uses!
To be, or not to be...
3rd Grade is into Shakespeare!
If we mention that we read Shakespeare with third graders, some people tend to give us strange looks. But here at Saint Paul, third grade Shakespeare is not only possible, but fun! It started with discussions of comedy and tragedy, then read "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Romeo and Juliet" respectively.

As a culminating activity each student turned one of the stories into a puppet show or graphic novel to present to the class. The unit was timed to correspond with Shakespeare's birthday on April 23. So, want to know more about Shakespeare? Ask a third grader!
Enrollment Underway for Next Fall
Acceptance letters for the 2009-2010 academic year have been mailed, but we still are accepting enrollment applications for grade levels with openings.  If you know of a family who might be interested in a Christian education for their preschool through eighth grade children, please encourage them to call the school at 847-255-6733 to set up an appointment to visit or to obtain more information.  God has blessed us greatly and we want to spread that blessing to as many others as possible.  Our graduates do well in high school in all venues: academic, athletic, and fine arts.  Help us let Christ's light shine into more lives.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to give us a call.
