"The Military Goes Green" - How They're Reducing Their 'Carbon Bootprint'       

The Military Goes Green Join the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center for a night on the USS Midway to learn how the nation's single largest user of energy is cutting back on fossil fuel to save lives and billions of dollars. Colonel Dan Nolan (US Army retired) and Mr. Stephen Worthington (Navy Region Southwest) will tour the many ways in which the military is making efforts to reduce its "Carbon Bootprint." The night will include specific details, featured in the PBS series, EARTH: The Operators' Manual, illustrating measures the different branches within the US Military are taking and their local impact. Recycling Cool Stuff into Imaginative Creations in the "Tinkering Studio"
Tinkering Fun hands-on challenges for all ages: design and construct simple mechanical toys from recycled materials, make origami and Spirograph artwork, build marble "roller coasters" using tubes and ramps, or create "digital bling" using colorful LED lights, batteries and accessories. Families work together experimenting and collaborating on creative activities designed to spark curiosity and foster exploration, following in the inventive footsteps of Alexander Graham Bell, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison in the new and improved "Tinkering Studio," returning by popular demand!
 Free with gallery or IMAX combo admission.

The Great White That Almost Got Away: Moby Dick, the Opera and WHALES
MOBY-DICK & WHALES
A unique presentation by Dr. Nicolas Reveles, SD Opera's Geisel Director of Education and Outreach, and Dr. Ann Bowles, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist with the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute; sharing dramatic audio and visual highlights from the new opera Moby-Dick, based on Herman Melville's 19th century literary masterpiece (opening in February). Then follow giant cetaceans on the 76-foot fulldome screen in the IMAX� film WHALES ~ blue, orca, sperm whales and humpbacks ~ traveling thousands of miles from the frigid coast of Alaska to the warm waters of Hawaii; featuring spectacular underwater footage. Tickets will be pre-sold at sdopera.com starting in December. Admission is $6 per person, all ages. Please note this is a special presentation and there will be no discounts or vouchers of any kind accepted

Digital Dome Installation Underway, to Open with BLACK HOLES: The Other Side of Infinity
Black Holes
The installation has begun on a state-of-the-art, fulldome giant screen digital projection system that will augment the existing IMAX� projector in the Eugene Heikoff and Marilyn Jacobs Heikoff Dome Theater with one of the most comprehensive and powerful immersive fulldome experiences available today. The new projection system promises to take our popular The Sky Tonight planetarium shows to a new level, featuring stunningly immersive visuals and incredibly realistic simulations of cosmic phenomena. The Fleet's first-ever daily public planetarium show, beginning February 4,  will be BLACK HOLES: The Other Side of Infinity, which guides you through other-worldly wormholes to experience the creation of the Milky Way Galaxy and the violent death of a star and subsequent birth of a black hole. Our next live Sky Tonight planetarium show, using the new system, will be Wednesday, February 1st. (Dates Subject to change)
