 The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is proud to join science centers around the world in celebrating International Year of Astronomy! IYA 2009 commemorates the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the skies. Join us on Wednesday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. as we host our first The Sky Tonight planetarium show in the newly renovated Space Theater! Read below for other January IYA activities. NASA's New Mars Rover Lands in San Diego |
 Scheduled to launch in 2011, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover is coming to the Fleet Science Center first... and it needs a name! From January 7 to February 4, you can see the full-sized rover prototype in our Space Theater lobby area, on loan from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Students in grades K-12 can enter a contest to name the actual rover and win a trip to JPL! The contest deadline is January 25, and entries can be submitted at the Fleet Science Center or online. "Race and Culture in Medicine" |
January's Exploring Ethics program will examine the complexities of race and culture in the practice of medicine. How do the concepts of race and culture alter the practice of medicine? In what ways should medical practitioners be blind to or take into account race and culture? RSVPs are requested for this popular evening lecture series.

Meet the Inventor! |
Have you ever wondered, "How did they come up with that?" Meet toy inventor Mark Rappaport of Marky Sparky Toys and learn about the creative process of invention with fun live performances. Then, work side-by-side with the inventor to create your very own launch pad rocket and recyclable piñata in the Fleet's "Tinkering" Studio.
