MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH MONTH

By Pierluigi Mancini, Ph.D., CEO

May has been officially recognized as Mental Health Month since 1949.  CETPA continues to utilize these annual celebrations as opportunities to educate our community about the importance of recognizing the signs of mental illness. A lot of effort has helped explain that feelings of sadness, anxiety, worry or sleep problems are common. However, what seems to be missing is the understanding that when these feelings get intense, last for long periods of time or begin to interfere with school, friendships and other relationships, it may be a sign of a mental illness and time to seek professional help.  Today, thanks to the efforts of many people, the Latino community has a safe place to come and receive help for their emotional problems in a linguistic and culturally appropriate manner.

Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally, with an estimated 22.1 percent of Americans age 18 and older or 1 in 5 adults suffering from a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year.

As former First Lady Rosalynn Carter once said: "People with mental problems are our neighbors. They are members of our congregations, members of our families; they are everywhere in this country. If we ignore their cries for help, we will be continuing to participate in the anguish from which those cries for help come. A problem of this magnitude will not go away. Because it will not go away, and because of our spiritual commitments, we are compelled to take action." This includes all of the immigrants that are part of the make up of our wonderful state.

However, there are many barriers to accessing mental health services for the Latino community including availability, accessibility, affordability, culture and language - we cannot close our eyes to this need and must continue to "take action" and continue to build culturally appropriate programs and services in Georgia to meet the demand of this underserved population.

CETPA is grateful to Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Commissioner Frank E. Shelp, MD, and his wonderful staff in the Division of Addictive Disease and Division of Mental Health, for his leadership and continued support in the development of these services.

(Everything Has a Beginning)

by:  Nicky Lopez

To commemorate National Alcohol Awareness month in April, CETPA's Statewide Alcohol Initiative created a media campaign under the slogan,

Nicky Lopez

"Todo Tiene su Comienzo..." (Everything Has a Beginning) and produced a Public Service Announcement to illustrate how a parent can influence the actions of their children. To distribute the video, we used social media channels and press releases. In addition to the social media campaign, the alcohol initiative put together Town Hall meetings to educate parents on the legal, health and social consequences of allowing their children to drink and on steps to prevent underage drinking in their homes. The Town Hall meetings were held in Savannah, Norcross, Dalton, Carrollton, and Valdosta.

The speakers were from diverse backgrounds in accordance to the cultural competence needs of each community.  We had state representative Pedro Marin in Norcross, police officers from Whitfield County in Dalton, two mental health professionals in Savannah, a medical doctor in Valdosta, among others.  All engaged the audience and offered helpful insight in the subject. The events were held in partnership with organizations throughout Georgia, in Dalton we partnered with the Coalition of Latino Leaders (CLILA) and Latinos for Education and Justice (LEJO), Centro Hispano was our partner in Savannah, Latinos United of Carroll County (LUCC) in Carrollton, Lake Park Migrant Workers Clinic in Valdosta and Renovacin Conyugal in Norcross. The campaign served almost 300 people in direct services through the Town Hall meetings and approximately 6,000 people through the social media updates and postings.

Frequently Asked Questions About ADHD

By: Gloria Juliao M.A., LPC

What is ADHD?

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or ADD (attention deficit disorder) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and continues until ad
ulthood. It includes a combination of

Gloria Juliao

behavioral problems such as: difficulty maintaining/sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviors. Children with ADHD are likely to struggle with low self esteem, troubled relationships, and academic difficulties.

Difference Between ADHD and Other Behavioral Problems:

To diagnose a child with ADHD/ADD some of the symptoms need to be present before the age of 7. In some cases, some ADHD symptoms can be seen as early as age 3. There are 3 areas that encompass ADHD: hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. In some children, one of the areas precedes the other ones; however, a vast number of children show the combination of inattention and hyperactivity. ADHD is more visible when children engage in activities that require a higher degree of concentration. In regards to hyperactivity, children struggle with sitting still, thus fidgeting all the time, constantly moving, running and climbing (excessive body movement). Children who struggle with hyperactivity can talk for long periods of time without stopping, have a hard time waiting for their turn and they constantly interrupt other's conservations. Children's inattention comes about in daily activities such as completing chores and homework--they forget to brush their teeth, turn in their homework, and get dress. Sometimes children can concentrate for long periods of time when something is fun or calls their attention such as playing a video game. Lastly, impulsivity is seen when kids interrupt others or when they try to answer questions before the question has been asked. An impulsive child wants everything right at the moment.

A lot of children are impulsive, hyper or inattentive at one or several times in their life. Some parents get concern when their 3 yo child cannot keep his/her attention during reading time. It is normal for a preschooler to have a short attention span. In older kids and adolescents, the concentration level is going to be determined by the degree of interest in the activity they engage in. Some adolescents can concentrate for long periods of time with face to face or over the phone conversations, but struggle concentrating while completing homework. Younger children are by nature more energetic than their parents thus worrying the parents when after a long day of play the child continues to require play time. Some children struggle with their behavior at school but have good behavior at home or vice versa. The same goes with children who act out at home but are able to maintain good grades and healthy relationships.

Treatment Options:

If you are concern that your child is exhibiting ADHD symptoms such as: trouble concentrating, sitting still, showing behavioral problems at home and school you can consult with your child's pediatrician or family physician.

CETPA is a non profit agency that specializes in the treatment of mental health and substance abuse. We work with children ages 3 and up who struggle with behavioral and other mental health problems. CETPA is fortunate to have bilingual therapists, psychiatrist, psychologist and nurse. In some cases during the phase of the treatment for ADHD, the psychiatrist may recommend medication to assist in reducing the symptoms such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta. The medication helps to increase dopamine (a substance in the brain that helps the frontal lobe focus, filter and inhibit thoughts, feelings and behaviors) levels in the brain. It is important that children who receive psychiatric treatment (medication) also seek counseling to help with self control, time management, self esteem and anger management.
