Subbing gigs available in NYC public schools

Do you want to use your music to enrich the lives of public school children -- while getting paid? The Actors Fund has come up with a very creative way for musicians and other artists to do part-time teaching gigs in the New York City public schools through the Actors Fund Work Program. It's not without some fine print, but it just might turn out to be a positive experience for you and a way to increase your income.

LOCAL 802 HOLIDAY PARTY IS TONIGHT!

Local 802 members are invited to our annual holiday party tonight (Wednesday, December 14) here at Local 802 (322 West 48th Street) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Come and enjoy delicious food from neighborhood restaurants and the live music of the Bertha Hope Trio with song stylist Keisha St. Joan.

GIVE THE GIFT
OF LOVE

This fall and winter, there are plenty of folks who need food -- and also toys to give to their kids for the holidays. Local 802 is collecting both.

Here's what's needed: canned fruit, canned vegetables, peanut butter in plastic jars, packages of mac and cheese, large boxes of hot and cold cereal (family sized, if possible), and any new toys and clothes.

We give all donations to City Harvest and the Federation of Protestant Welfare Charities.

Bring your donations to Kimeo Lee on the third floor of the union building or look for a box in the Club Room.

For more info, call (212) 245-4802, ext. 142 or click here.

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?

Do you live near Local 802 and are you over 60? If so, click here. Local 802 members who are over 60 and who live in the target neighborhoods should click here right now to take the survey. Please pass along this survey with any musician you know over 60 who lives in these neighborhoods by clicking this button:

ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH TAX?

As a musician, your employers and bandleaders are legally required to pay their fair share of your taxes. If you're paid cash for gigs, you're losing money -- possibly tens of thousands of per year. For more information, click here or call the Organizing Department at (212) 245-4802.

OUT OF WORK?

If you are a Broadway musician and your show closes, can you apply for unemployment? Yes. While you are collecting unemployment, can you sub on other Broadway shows, teach lessons, and play other freelance gigs? Yes, but your unemployment check may be reduced. For a comprehensive look at musicians and unemployment insurance, click here.
