Teamsters need our help! See article below...

Join Local 802 to march in support of locked out employees of Sotheby's on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

"Union busting is disgusting!" We've heard it on picket lines and we know that it's true. It's true wherever employers undermine the rights of employees and it's true at Sotheby's auction gallery where members of Teamsters Local 814 have been locked out in a contract dispute for the last three months. These are the workers who actually handle the objects and art works that Sotheby's sells for millions.

Sotheby's has engaged one of the country's most notorious anti-union management consultants, the law firm of Jackson Lewis, to guide its labor relations. Sotheby's is demanding concessions from its union employees after it made $680 million last year, with a CEO taking home $60,000 A DAY.

New York City labor, students, and supporters will be joining the picket line to confront management during Sotheby's biggest auction of the year.

On Wednesday, we'll be meeting by the subway exit at 68th and Lexington at 5 p.m., joining supporters from a student-labor forum at Hunter, and walking together at 5:30 to the demonstration at Sotheby's on York Ave, between 71st and 72nd Streets. See you there!

Occupy Wall Street? Against the war? Read on...

After Local 802's Executive Board unanimously endorsed the Oct. 5 labor rally in support of Occupy Wall Street, we received many letters about the decision. If you want to join the discussion, please give us your feedback here.

With the energy and vision coursing through the country, what better moment could there be to amplify labor's voice for peace, the end of militarized foreign policy, and new priorities that champion the urgent needs of the people.

Local 802 is on the host committee for a fundraiser for U.S. Labor Against the War this Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m at the 1199SEIU Penthouse, 330 West 42 Street. Please join us. Get tickets here. We'll hear Wisconsin teachers' union president Bryan Kennedy speak about the challenges still going on there.

The U.S. has spent about $1.2 trillion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001. Instead, imagine what a trillion dollars could do for the arts scene.
