What's your story? See below...

We recently published a story about what a group of Juilliard grads are doing with their musical careers. We'd like to hear from more musicians about this topic. You can answer the same questions the Juilliard grads answered, or you can tell us anything about your musical story: how you're making a living in music right now, how you got to where you are, what you had wish you had known when getting into music, and what you would tell young musicians who are just starting out. Click here to respond. By responding, you give us permission to print and edit your words in Allegro or 802 Notes.

Are you experienced? If so, read below...

Do you live near Local 802 and are you over 60? If so, click here. The Actors Fund is now conducting a survey of experienced entertainers living in the neighborhoods of Clinton/Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea. These neighborhoods have historically been home to people working in the performing arts.

With the number of people over 55 doubling in the next 20 years and Manhattan Plaza already home to over 1,000 seniors, the Actors Fund is focusing on these neighborhoods to better understand the changing needs of older performing arts professionals.

The survey will be conducted from now through December. The findings will help provide a better understanding of needs, identify gaps in services and help the Actors Fund organize and further develop resources and services for seniors in the entertainment and performing arts community.

Local 802 members who are over 60 and who live in the target neighborhoods should click here right now to take the survey, or click here for more information.

Please pass along this survey with any musician you know over 60. Click the link below to share it:

JAZZ JAM!

There is a jazz jam on most Mondays at Local 802 (322 West 48th Street), from 7 to 9:30 p.m. For more information, call Joe Petrucelli at the Jazz Foundation of America at (212) 245-3999, ext. 10, or click here.

ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH TAX?

As a musician, your employers and bandleaders are legally required to pay their fair share of your taxes. If you're paid cash for gigs, you're losing money -- possibly tens of thousands of per year. For more information, click here or call the Organizing Department at (212) 245-4802.

OUT OF WORK?

If you are a Broadway musician and your show closes, can you apply for unemployment? Yes. While you are collecting unemployment, can you sub on other Broadway shows, teach lessons, and play other freelance gigs? Yes, but your unemployment check may be reduced. For a comprehensive look at musicians and unemployment insurance, click here.

NEED A PHONE NUMBER OR E-MAIL...FAST?

The entire Local 802 directory is available online. You can search for fellow musicians and find the contact info you're looking for! Just log in as a member here.

DO YOU HAVE MONEY WAITING FOR YOU?

Somtimes the union may have a check in your name, but no way to get it to you because your address is outdated. To see if there's money waiting for you, click here.
NEED A PRACTICE SPACE?

Did you know that Local 802 rents out its Club Room to members for only $10 per hour? This room has a grand piano and drum set. We also have a second room in back as well as a soundproofed solo practice room. To make your reservation now, contact Maureen Cupid at (212) 245-4802, ext. 111 or click here.

NEED HELP?

Need counseling, drug abuse help, financial aid, or health care referrals?  The office of the Musicians' Assistance Program is your one-stop shop for musicians' health. We offer counseling -- both one-on-one and in groups -- as well as information on all kinds of social services, including health insurance, food stamps and more. All services are free to Local 802 members. For more information, click here or call (212) 397-4802.
