Is there such a thing as too much technique?

How often our audiences wowed by a technical performance that falls way short musically?

Anthony Tommasini pondered this in a recent New York Times article. He wrote: "There is a danger in pursuing perfection. After Van Cliburn won the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition and became a household name, every young pianist saw competitions as the route to fame and success. A new generation worked tirelessly to achieve technical flawlessness. Critics found that many of these young pianists had 'competition chops' but not much else to offer." (Read the whole article here ).

And earlier this year, Allegro ran a story by violinist Joseph Gallo in which he wrote: "At concerts, I have seen knee-jerk standing ovations for not much more than displays of technique, grimaces and gyrations." (Read the whole article here)

What do you think? Have you recently heard any highly technical performances that were unmusical? Can music schools and conservatories teach musicality, or is it something that the individual musician must develop through a highly personal journey? E-mail your responses by clicking here. (We may edit and print your response in Allegro and/or 802 NOTES.)

Detroit musicians take the lead

It's been over four months since the Detroit musicians' strike ended. Musicians are still trying to heal and to raise their symphony back up where it belongs.  Now they've come up with a novel approach: they are going to attempt to place ordinary audience members on the board of directors. This daring strategy will take time and money -- and they could use your help. Read the complete story here
