What are your memories
of 9/11? | |
This fall marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11. As musicians, we were doubly affected by the terrorist attacks. Like everyone else, we mourned the loss of life, but we also suffered losses to our livelihoods, when tourism tanked in the city. As a musician, what are your memories of 9/11, as we approach the 10th anniversary? Click here to leave a response. We may edit and print your response in an upcoming issue of Allegro. Please keep your responses brief so we may print as many as possible.

Boycott Conn-Selmer horns and other instruments!
| |
The AFM has announced its support for the 235 workers of musical instrument maker Conn-Selmer's Eastlake, Ohio, brass instrument plant who went on strike July 26. The metal workers, members of UAW Local 2359, had been working without a contract since February, when their contract expired. The two sides have failed to reach an agreement in negotiations that began in January. The company, which has a long history of labor strife in its plants, has proposed cutting some workers' pay by 65 percent, taking away pensions, and doubling health care costs. "We stand in solidarity with the highly skilled workers at Conn-Selmer who make some of the finest brass instruments played by the Federation's members," says AFM President Ray Hair. "Please support Local 2359's stance against corporate greed by boycotting Conn-Selmer products and instruments." For a full list of the company's many brand names, including Bach, Leblanc, Emerson, Prelude, and many others, click here.
For more background on why we feel that Conn-Selmer treats its workers unfairly, click here to read a story we published in Allegro and click here to read the AFM's press release.

Is your information current? |
Local 802 is going to publish its biannual membership directory at the end of this year. Thousands of musicians use this as a valuable resource. It's the number-one phone book for the professional musician community. However, many members don't have current contact info on file with the union. When we print the directory, we use the information that's in our database. Once we print the directory, it's too late to make any changes! So now is the time to make sure your information is accurate. Also, please note that your union dues must be current for you to appear in the directory.
