A radio station for union musicians?

AFM Local 47 (Los Angeles) recently created an internet radio station that plays only its members' music. Here's how it works: members send in their CD's to the union, and union staff converts the CD's to MP3 files and uploads the files to the radio station, which is hosted by Live365.com. The station makes proper royalty payments to SoundExchange and musicians have the potential to earn royalties and gain exposure. To visit the station, click here.

If Local 802 were to set up a similar station, it would be an investment in time and money. What do you think? E-mail your feedback by clicking here.

The sound of history

Library of Congress offering free streams of 10,000 historical, public domain recordings

The Library of Congress has launched National Jukebox, a web site that gives free access to over 10,000 recordings made between the years of 1901 and 1925. Recordings, all from the RCA and Columbia vaults now owned by Sony Music, are available for streaming only. The range is vast, from Al Jolson to Enrico Caruso, Nellie Melba, Rachmaninoff and George Gershwin playing "Rhapsody in Blue" with the Paul Whiteman Concert Orchestra.

Click here to visit National Jukebox now.

Spoken word recordings are also accessible, inclusive of political speeches by Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, readings from the Bible and early sound-effects records. So too are images of liner notes, record labels, catalog illustrations and artist bios. The entire "Victrola Book of the Opera" from 1919, which describes over 110 operas, has been digitized, such that a user can not only read the full text but also stream nearly all of its recordings.

All of the material, inclusive of that from the Victor Talking Machine Company is being provided free of charge by Sony Music. (EMI also contributed the use of the Victor licenses it owns.)
