Major demonstration planned at 'Priscilla' this Thursday
You won't want to miss this...we'll be out there in full force with live music!
Join us this Thursday, May 26 at 7:15 p.m. in front of the Palace Theatre (1564 Broadway, between 46th and 47th) to let producers of "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" know that live music shouldn't be cut! This will be our biggest action yet and we'll be there with live musicians. If you can make it, we need you there!*
For more background information on our campaign for live music and our struggle with "Priscilla," click here to go to our campaign web site at www.SaveLiveMusicOnBroadway.com. Read the updates and share the news with your family and friends.
*If you can't make it on Thursday, we'll be leafleting every show of "Priscilla," 45 minutes before curtain. Please note that we will not be there over Memorial Day weekend (Friday to Monday). For more information or to volunteer, e-mail theatre rep Marisa Friedman at Mfriedman@Local802afm.org

Beware of "fake tours"
Low-paid foreign orchestras are masquerading as high-class ensembles
The New York Times recently reported that a certain touring and production company is sending out foreign orchestras on tour with allegedly unfair wages and touring conditions. Audiences think they're getting name-brand ensembles, but really they're getting a cheap knockoff. Plus, musicians are getting paid less than our standards, bringing down all of our wages. Remember, if you get called to do a foreign tour, it might not be all that it's cracked up to be. Read an article we published in Allegro about nightmare tours. If you get called for a foreign tour, call the union first!

Pension planning
Do you know how much money you'll get when you retire?
If you play union gigs, you can build up payments into your pension account at the AFM Pension Fund. But how much is this actually worth when you retire? The AFM pension fund recently announced a new online service for its participants: a Pension Benefit Estimator on its web site at www.afm-epf.org.
This is one of the most useful tools ever to come out of the pension fund. You can actually get an estimate of what your monthly pension will be when you retire, based on the money that is in your own account! It takes a little leg work to use the Estimator, but it's worth it.
To start, go to www.afm-epf.org and go to the lower-left corner of the site. Follow the instructions to register. Once you register, click on Pension Estimator from the left-hand blue bar menus. In order to use the Estimator, you have to manually type in figures from your own, personal pension statements, which you get once a year from the fund. If you don't keep these on file, you can print your statements out by selecting Covered Earnings Reports - Interim and Annual from the left-hand menus.
Using the Estimator will take an investment in time. But once you've figured it out, you will get an estimate of how much money you're due when you retire!
