Save the Grammys!

Protest the decision to eliminate 31 categories of Grammy awards

The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences recently voted to eliminate 31 categories of Grammy awards, including Best Classical Album, Best Latin Jazz Album and Best Chamber Music Performance. The removal of these and other categories (like Best Hawaiian Album, Best Zydeco/Cajun Album and Best Native American Album) weakens musicians' chances to be recognized for their achievements. It also shows a disrespect for the diversity of American music.

Are you an artist looking for housing?

How does $635 a month in rent sound to you?

Are you a single musician looking for housing? Studio apartments in the brand-new facility known as the Schermerhorn are available and applications are being accepted now. The building is in downtown Brooklyn and the monthly rent is $635.

More information and a complete story are in the May 2011 issue of Allegro, which you should have received in the mail by now. (If you're not receiving Allegro, click here.)

Action alert!

Don't audition for the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra!

The Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (OSB) is organizing auditions in New York City on May 20 to 23 to fill the positions of unfairly dismissed OSB musicians. Local 802 requests that musicians NOT participate in these auditions because doing so undermines the OSB musicians who were improperly terminated.

In March, nearly half of the orchestra was dismissed by Music Director Roberto Minczuk for "insubordination" after they refused to comply with management's demands that they re-audition for their jobs. Since then, outrage over the situation has spread and musicians all over the world solidly stand in support of the dismissed musicians.
