Broadway Strike Update November 21, 2007

Response to Letter from The League

You may receive or have already received a "Dear Valued Employee" letter from The League of American Theatres and Producers.

The differences between the parties outlined in the letter would not appear to be so substantial as to have justified the League walking away from the bargaining table and refusing to meet this past Monday when Local 1 offered to do so.  This is particularly true given that Local 1 has already compromised on certain work rules, most particularly on the load in.

We are urging the League to return to the table, rather than trying to resolve the remaining issues by writing letters to those who while deeply affected by this dispute are not parties to the negotiations.  The only solution is to return to the bargaining table and not leave until the deal is done.

Local 802 continues to support and stand behind Local 1's insistence that the League meet and negotiate the old fashioned way - with respect, moderation, and consideration for their employees.

Note from the President

I want to commend the musicians who are showing up and spending time at their theaters, demonstrating Local 802's solidarity with Local One at this difficult time. I encourage all members of Local 802 to show your support to your fellow musicians and to the members of Local One. I wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving holiday, and especially for the Broadway community, a speedy and fair resolution to the Local One contract negotiations.

In Solidarity,
Mary Landolfi

One Grinch
Is Enough

"I think one Grinch in town is enough,'' said New York State Supreme Court Judge Helen Freedman in her courtroom this morning as the judge ordered that the show be allowed to re-open at the St. James Theater beginning with the 11 AM show this Friday, November 23. The show's producer cast and crew were all heartened by the ruling. For it's part the League described it's Grinch like action of closing the St James Theatre on a non league producer as part of their labor relations strategy. Grinch musicians should keep in touch with the in-house contractor as to the performance schedule.
