  September 2009

Greetings!
Our long hot summer is almost over, the kids are back to school and our winter friends will be coming back soon. We're getting ready for our 4th LabFest on Sept. 26th. Remember we will be closed that Saturday morning for all the fun over at Four Freedoms Park.

Check out SupportCapeCoral.com for additional coupons for our store (and others in the Cape) plus the 10% off food coupon at the end of this newsletter. Everything on our clearance table is marked $1.99 - $4.99 with carriers, beds and feeders $9.99 - great deals!!!

Stanley, our last orange tabby found a home, and a few days later we added another litter. Of these we have another orange tabby, Oscar, and a cream tabby, Elmo at the store for adoption. These guys  are very sweet and love to be held. So if you need a kitty fix...stop by.

We will be closed on Labor Day, but hope to see you later in the week.

Our group is comprised of hardworking volunteers and vets that are committed to the wellfare of Labrador retrievers. We have been working together since 2000 and have rescued over 3000 dogs throughout the state.

Taffy
This year we've faced rising numbers of foster dogs in our care with medical costs sky rocketing. Locally, Taffy, required surgery for an ectopic ureter to correct urinary incontinence.  She is doing fabulous and ready for her new home. Taffy is petite dog, with a mellow and loving personality. If you would like to contribute to her surgery expenses, please give Laurie a call at 229-8273.
The Best Shot Possible - 5 Photo Tips

catPictures of pets are some of the most popular in any family. Unfortunately, they also suffer the most from poor quality such as when your pet's eyes end up glowing green like some evil demon in every shot you take.

Well, here are 5 surefire tips to help capture the best shots possible - hopefully you'll enter the Evanger's calendar contest and we'll have a local winner.

1) Get down on their level. Most pet photos are taken from the perspective of a human being looking down while the pet looks up. If they're moving, pan with them as you take the shot.

2) Stick with natural light. Turn off or cover the on-camera flash. On-camera flashes are evil. They flatten everything out, cast harsh shadows and are the source of the infamous glowing green pet eyes.

3) Stay out of direct sun and shoot in the morning or late afternoon.

4) Don't wait for the perfect moment and don't be afraid to take lots of shots. Since most people take digital photos now so you can essentially take as many pictures as you want. With pets, unpredictability is the rule of law.

5) Edit, edit, edit. It's easy to become enamored of the 100 pictures you took of Bengie playing with his first Frisbee but chances are your friends won't feel the same way. Limit what you save to only the very best.

Dog Flu - Don't Panic!

You may have recently come across an article on a new "Dog Flu" caught up in all the buzz about Swine Flu. The Canine Influenza Virus was identified back in 2004 and it is likely that no dogs you know have even been in contact with it.

CIV is one of several viruses and bacteria that are associated with canine infectious respiratory disease, or what's commonly referred to as "kennel cough". The flu-like illness consisting of coughing, sneezing, and nasal discharge.  Most dogs recover within 2 weeks without any further complications. However,
some dogs progress to pneumonia, usually due to secondary bacterial infections which can be life threatening.

Because it is a virus, treatment consists mainly of supportive care to make your dog comfortable while the virus runs its course, much like for human influenza. You should consult with your veterinarian if you think your dog has canine influenza to determine what type of supportive care is needed, including whether antibiotics should be given for secondary bacterial infections.

A vaccination was released in May of this year. It is considered a "lifestyle" vaccine intended for dogs at risk for exposure to CIV, including those that participate in activities with many other dogs or are housed in communal facilities, such as greyhound racetracks. You should consult with your veterinarian to help as to whether to vaccinate your dogs or not. Lifestyle and risk of exposure should be discussed with the vet and IF you choose to vaccinate your dog be sure to get 2 vaccinations 3 weeks apart. If you have a stay-at-home, coach potato who takes an occasional trip to the park for a walk; this vaccine is probably not for your dog.

 Miss Autumn's Barkery Organics
buffalo jar
We are excited to introduce a new organic food to our mix. Miss Autumn's Barkery Dog Food and Organic Treats is as close to home-cooking as you can get for your dog.  Actually that's how the company got started...cooking for two dogs Missy and Autumn.
Five years ago Victoria and Robert McDowell lost a dog to a rare cancer.
"We just said that's not going to happen again to another dog, and I'm simply going to cook for my dogs," said Victoria McDowell.
So, five years ago that's where it began, and now their business is global.
Miss Autumn's
Barkery is headquartered in Jackson, Missouri in the McDowell's basement. However; they've run out of room and are working on a major expansion into a genuine production faility.  Look for more formulas as they grow. I believe in this company and hope to contribute to their growth and success.

The next time you're in the store try a treat sample and look for the Miss Autumn's jars.
