Our Second Victory Scored!

Thanks to the 222 businesses, and scores of citizens and leaders -- so far -- who've signed the petition to the city of Austin, we've scored another BIG victory in stopping an additional $60 million subsidy -- the Domain II.

We can score our biggest -- and last victory -- to stop the $65 million subsidy of the Domain I Mall.  But we need your help. Please ACT NOW, while the city is in budget deliberations.  Take a few minutes to do the 4 action below (ask a business owner to sign the petition, do our survey, save the date for our press conference on Sept. 4, and make a financial contribution.

    The first big score was when SDS founder, Brian Rodgers, won an out-of-court settlement with the City of Austin and Domain developers that the city can just walk away from the $65 million subsidy of Domain I.  Now, a very well-placed rumor has it that the developers of the Domain II (the second half of the mall), will NOT be approaching the Austin City Council for a second round of subsidies, to the tune of approximately $60 million!  Why?  Perhaps somebody noticed our full page Chronicle ad with the petition from almost 200 Austin independent businesses.

OUR PLAN TO STOP THE DOMAIN I SUBSIDY

   Now that the Domain II subsidy appears dead, our focus is on Domain I ($65 million).  In September, the City of Austin, could write their first check to subsidize the Domain I Mall project.  Stop Domain Subsidies plans to initiate a citizen's petition drive to place a city charter amendment on the May '08 ballot.  The measure would allow voters to stop the Council from granting any retail subsidies like the Domain in the future.  Since the Domain subsidy is spread out over 20 years, it will also put a stop to the Domain subsidy.  

    Please plan on attending our press conference (on Tues., Sept. 4, place to be announced) to initiate the signatures drive by answering our survey (see more below).  

    We will need approximately 20,000 signatures to get the measure on the May '08 ballot.  We'll have until the end of January to get the signatures.
