Whoa! A practical list of things to stop doing now

BY RICK SCHMITT

Management Specialist

In many of my columns I challenge you to "just do it," and often provide a list of activities or actions for you to consider "just doing." This month I want to base this column on the old saying, "When you find that you are digging yourself into a hole, the first priority is to stop digging." This prevents further deterioration of the situation - and often provides the time needed to work your way out of the hole.

So the mantra this month is "Just stop doing it." My list of things to stop doing includes...

Modern Distribution Management:
Price Increases Don't Appear to be Going Away Any Time Soon

BY LINDSAY KONZAK

If the latest earnings releases for the first quarter are any indication, distributors will continue to face price increases through the end of this year thanks to ongoing volatility in raw material costs.

Many suppliers instituted raw material surcharges and/or price increases to offset the cost jumps in the first quarter. Some noted that they continue to improve efficiencies internally to improve profitability, as well.

In March, wholesale prices had risen 0.7 percent, according to the Producer Price Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase followed price hikes in January and February. I found one recently. I got my daughters a puppy and suddenly I had reason to visit pet stores for various toys and tools. Most were fine, nothing special, but then I walked into an amazing pet store: The prices were great, the staff was incredibly helpful, the place was spotless and well laid out, they even had a great return policy. Or how about this: The day after I got home, they called me to say that the dog food I had bought was just put on sale and they wanted me to come in and get a refund.

Now that is a great small business.
