Tip of the Month

Exercise Your Mind

Just as physical activity keeps your body strong, mental activity keeps your mind sharp and agile. One way to do this is to continually challenge yourself by learning new skills. If you continue to learn and challenge yourself, your brain continues to grow, literally. An active brain produces new connections between nerve cells that allow cells to communicate with one another. This helps your brain store and retrieve information more easily, no matter what your age.

How can you challenge yourself?

Try these Tips:
Playing Scrabble or doing crossword puzzles
Interacting with others
Switching careers or starting a new one
Starting a new hobby, such as crafts, painting, biking or belly dancing
Learning a foreign language
Learning to play a musical instrument
Volunteering
Staying informed about what's going on in the world
Reading.

YOU are doing it now and your mind is thanking you!

As you're absorbing this Newsletter, "parts of the brain that have evolved for other functions - such as vision, language, and associate learning - connect in a specific neutral circuit for reading, which is very challenging" says Ken Pugh, PHD, Haskins Laboratories.  Soooo . . .   don't just see the movie, read the book!

According to the Mayo Clinic, a mentally stimulating job, taking classes that interest you or even just reading more can help you maintain your memory longer as you age.

Combine brown sugar , garlic, dill and cracked pepper together in small bowl; mix well.

Clean grill with wire brush.

Arrange salmon on plank; brush salmon with soy sauce.
Rub brown sugar mixture evenly over fillets.

Place plank with salmon on grill; close cover. Reduce heat to MEDIUM; cook salmon 12-15 min, until internal temp reaches 130 degrees. Check by inserting thermometer halfway into thickest part of salmon. Remove from grill; let rest at least 2 min.
