Fighting Hunger in Long Beach
|
The Jewish Federation, the Kehillah Leadership Council, and the Temple Israel Brotherhood are working together to help the Centro Shalom Food Pantry stock its shelves throughout 2010 and 2011. Each month a different organization, synagogue or agency will be hosting a food drive for Centro Shalom.
During the month of July, Temple Beth Ohr, La Mirada stepped up to the plate and has already begun collecting canned goods, cereal, pasta, and many other things. Other synagogues and agencies are encouraged to email Sharon Kenigsberg and sign up for a month. P'nai Or has also already graciously signed up for the month of September. The Alpert JCC will be an ongoing collection site for canned goods for the campaign as well. Look for the multi-colored bins in the promenade!
Centro Shalom is a grassroots program providing vital services to immigrants and the
impoverished of greater Long Beach. Since its founding in 1977, it has
served hundreds of thousands of clients seeking assistance with
community advocacy, legal aid, housing, food, clothing, and other basic
needs. Centro Shalom provides support services for new immigrants, the
homeless and poor, serves a completely multicultural, multi-ethnic
community, free of charge. For more information about Centro, visit them on the web at www.centroshalom.org.

| 20th Anniversary of Operation Exodus | Jewish
Federations all over North America are joining a year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of Operation Exodus, a proud and historic
moment that demonstrated the power of the Federation movement to change the
world.
From 1990 to 1997, the Operation Exodus campaign successfully raised $1 billion
to rescue and resettle more than one million Soviet Jews in Israel and North
America.
The path to freedom for Soviet Jewry is a remarkable story of the power of the
individual and the power of our collective Federation movement. Some 40 years
ago, a handful of underground Jewish activists in the Soviet Union said "no
more." No more silence. No more compliance with oppressors who forbid us from
practicing our religion freely.
At extraordinary personal risk and sacrifice, each of these "refuseniks" became
a spark that would ignite a global movement to free Soviet Jewry. For decades,
"let my people go" became the clarion cry of the global Jewish community
worldwide, with the Jewish Federations of North America at the forefront.
From a $1 million-a-plate breakfast that raised $58 million in an hour to
telethons in communities across the continent, the Jewish Federations met the
challenges of this watershed moment in Jewish history -- and helped mark a new
chapter for human rights. You can learn more by visiting the Jewish Federations of North America.

Fact of the Week
|
Some 5,000 Israeli
teenagers recently participated in a Jewish Federation-supported program to
better understand the needs of the disabled. Part of a World ORT Kadima Mada
competition, the students met people with a range of disabilities, then built
practical aids for them, in a program linking science and technology with
sensitivity.
