JDC and Odessa Jewish Community Dedicate Beit Grand JCC
|
Here is a story about what the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach helps fund through our overseas partner, The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
The JDC is the world's
leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, and along with the Odessa
Jewish community, they formally dedicated the Beit Grand Jewish Cultural
Center last week. The Beit Grand JCC-the central address for Jewish life in
Odessa-has been supported and expanded through the generosity of
philanthropists Nancy and Stephen Grand and the Conference on Jewish
Material Claims Against Germany and serves one of the former Soviet
Union's most vibrant Jewish populations.
"The dedication of Beit Grand is a remarkable moment in the great
history of Jewish life in Odessa and speaks volumes about the role JDC
has played in the miraculous renewal of Jewish life in this city and
across the former Soviet Union," said JDC CEO Steven Schwager. Beit Grand is home to the city's Hesed Shaarey Tzion Welfare
organization and its Jewish Family Services program, as well as Hillel
and the Odessa Regional Association of Ghetto and Concentration Camp
Survivors. Since
1914, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) with support from Jewish Federations Across North America including the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach has given
global expression to the principle that all Jews are responsible for one
another. For more information about the JDC visit our website.

What's Your #ish?
|
The meaning of being Jewish depends on who you
ask. For
some, it's keeping kosher. For some, it's observing the Sabbath. For others, it
means personality traits, like a slightly neurotic outlook or a
self-deprecating wit. To us at the Jewish Federation of Greater Long Beach, it means helping others. So to raise awareness
about what our Federation does, and to involve as many young Jews as possible
in our work, we're participating in an online initiative asking people what it
means to be Jewish, while allowing them to help others at the same time. The "What's Your #ish?" campaign, sponsored by
The Jewish Federations of North America, invites people to describe what being
Jewish means to them by posting their definition, their "ish," on Facebook or
Twitter. By adding the "#" symbol to each "ish", the posts will be linked on a
new site especially for this campaign, called whatsyourish.com. Perhaps more importantly, participants will be
able to learn about Jewish Federation by participating. For every #ish, 25
cents will be credited for an #ish Fund that covers an array of needs Jewish
Federation addresses through the Annual Campaign. Then, each participant will
be able to vote on how the fund's resources get allocated, whether it's
poverty, elder care, Jewish identity, Israel solidarity or more. Participants
will also have the option of letting their Federation decide the greatest
needs. By helping allocate the fund, each participant
will learn about the mission and priorities of Jewish Federations. The whatsyourish.com Web site will also drive
participants to local Jewish Federation Web sites, where they will be able to
learn more details about their Jewish Federation and about how to get involved.

Fact of the Week
|
Thanks to funds from Jewish
Federations, the Ethiopian National Project's Youth Outreach Centers continued
to operate in 2009-10, keeping teens out of trouble and involved in positive
pursuits. The centers have extended hours during the summer and offer hikes,
field trips, and late-night movie screenings, to provide a supportive
framework for Ethiopian-Israeli teens during the day and into the late summer
nights.
