Mrs. O'Brien's and Mrs. Stein's ECE classes donate their Tzedakah to Haiti Relief Fund
ECE Classes
Each Alpert Jewish Community Center Early Childhood Education (ECE) classroom learns about the concept of Tzedakah or Charity.  When the kids learned about the Earthquake in Haiti, they didn't want to wait until the end of the year to make their donation.  Instead, they marched straight to the Jewish Federation's offices and gave every penny they had raised to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund.

Through the Federation's partner agency, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), their tzedakah will make the most impact on the ground in Haiti.

The Jewish Federations of North America collectively have donated 4.8 million dollars to date to the JDC's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. The Jewish Federations of North America continues to work with the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief (JCDR) to monitor allocations and coordinate efforts among Jewish organizations. So far, relief work is being done through non-governmental organizations, USAID and the United Nations

We would like to thank Mrs. O'Brien and Mrs. Stein's ECE classes as well as many other community members that have made donations to help the Haiti Earthquake victims.

Stand Up for Israel during Apartheid Week

flag
Right now, Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is taking place in more than a dozen cities and on many college campuses. In past years, IAW has been marked by extreme anti-Israel rhetoric, including accusations of Israeli racism and apartheid, and calls for boycott and divestment campaigns against Israel. We anticipate similar efforts to delegitimize Israel at this year's events.

Our local Long Beach Hillel has gathered materials and signs to post and pass out around campus to combat the lies that are being told.  The Muslim Student Association at CSULB
hosted a program entitled "Terrorized or Terrorist" during Islam Awareness Week, March 3rd and 4th.

April 19th and 20th, at CSULB, is Palestinian Awareness Week during which the Muslim Student Association will bring "the wall" to campus.  During this week, Beach Hillel will also hold their "Israel Week" with speakers, visits from soldiers, lunches, Shabbat Dinners, and campus tableing all Israeli style.

If you would like to make a contribution to help support Hillel's programming efforts to "Stand Up for Israel"  please click here.

You may also visit the ADL's website to learn more about Apartheid Week across the country and download their "Fighting Back" handbook designed to teach about strategic responses to demonstrations on campuses.
Evaluating Israel Emergency Campaign Impact
 IEC
The Jewish Federations of North America recently released a report on the lasting accomplishments of the second Israel Emergency Campaign that took place during the 2nd Lebanon War in 2006.  The report outlines the six main areas where Federation dollars, working through our partners the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, the Jewish Agency for Israel, and others, have made a significant, long-term impact.
