Linda DC 3President's Message

The first month sets the year's tone and ADAO has never done so much in 31 days! Thanks to those who make it happen - our volunteers, sponsors, Science Advisory Board, and supporters! For this eNewsletter, grab a cup of coffee, sit down, and join the homes and hearts of many through these stories.

As we prepare for an amazing annual conference, we are especially excited to announce that, for the first time ever, Saturday's dinner will be open to the public! We look forward to embracing the local community and celebrating those we love at dinner.

Also, a sincere thanks to all of our 2012 Official Sponsors and especially to Baron & Budd P.C. and the Simmons Firm for being Platinum Sponsors! ADAO is finalizing our 2012 Sponsors and conference program. Please email before February 22 if you are interested in becoming a sponsor or making a family tribute donation to help ADAO continue our educational, advocacy, and community efforts!

As you'll read in news from around the world, we are seeing a shifting political climate in favor of education, awareness, and prevention. Still, the USGS report highlights the U.S.' continued importation of asbestos at an increasing annual rate, reminding us of the need to remain committed to our mission.

Something new: in order to serve as a comprehensive source of news, we have aggregated a full list of the January's blogs for your quick and easy reference at the bottom of this month's newsletter.

Looking forward to more to come in 2012!

ADAO is pleased to announce that we will be honoring Steve McQueen with the Warren Zevon "Keep Me in Your Heart" Memorial Tribute Award. McQueen, a global cinema legend in the 1960s and 1970s, passed away in 1980 from the rare asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma. ADAO is grateful that the opportunity to honor Steve has also led to a wonderful new friendship with Barbara McQueen, Steve's widow. ADAO is honored that she will be joining us at the conference as a keynote speaker at our Sunday brunch and to sign her beautiful book at Saturday night's dinner. ADAO Organizes Senate Staff Briefing, "Asbestos: The Impact on Public Health, the Environment, and the Economy," in Washington, D.C.

ADAO's trip to Washington, D.C. was a huge success! Dr. Arthur Frank, Dr. Barry Castleman, Brent Kynoch, Marilyn Amento, and Linda Reinstein presented the most up-to-date information about the asbestos public health crisis with U.S. political decision-makers representing 16 states at our informational Senate Briefing, "Asbestos: The Impact on Public Health, the Environment, and the Economy," and numerous meetings with Senate and House offices. Our meetings and briefing raised asbestos and mesothelioma awareness and encouraged attendees to make policy to prevent exposure, eliminate disease, and save lives and dollars a priority in 2012. Thanks to all for your help and support!  Read more

US Geological Survey Reports Increased US Asbestos Consumption

The 2012 United States Geological Survey (USGS) Mineral Commodity Summaries reported that asbestos consumption has increased in the U.S. for the past three years (2009 - 2011).  There is currently no ban on asbestos in the U.S. despite its known status as a human carcinogen.  'Roofing products were estimated to account for about 60% of U.S. consumption; the chloralkali industry about 35%; and unknown applications, 5%. All of the asbestos used in the United States was chrysotile."

ADAO is urging President Obama and Congress to immediately prohibit the importation of raw asbestos and asbestos-containing products across our borders in order to protect public health.  We must begin to aggressively prevent exposure so that we can eliminate deadly diseases!  Read the full press release

The CBC News Network news report video, "Fatal Deception" highlighted inconsistencies and deceptions involved in a McGill University study on asbestos safety, the exposure of Canadian miners to asbestos, and their resulting asbestos-related health issues. "The McGill study cited is flawed, lacks transparency, and contains manipulated data," says Dr. David Egilman, a professor at Brown University, health activist, and longtime asbestos industry critic. Dr. Bruce Case, the McGill scientist featured in the video, at one point outright refused to share details of the study, further raising questions about its credibility. Not surprisingly, documents exposed show that government and industry funded the study with a vested interest in its results. Read more!
