"Let's gather together..."
Dr. Donny George, former Director of the Iraq Museum, calls on individuals and institutions around the world to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2003 looting of the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. in SAFE's Global Candlelight Vigil.
This coming April 10-12, on the fifth anniversary of the tragic event, take the opportunity to re-energize efforts to protect the world's cultural heritage by hosting a vigil. When you register your event with us, it will be listed so that others may see it and attend.
Our website features downloadable step-by-step tools to help you organize and publicize a vigil at your museum, college, university, with friends and family, and in your community. Make use of our easy-to-execute resources and tools such as:
- Vigil kits
- E-cards
- Announcement flyers
- Videos/films
- Press release template
- Vigil brochure
- Poster (shown here), postcard and other publicity tools designed for SAFE by the students at the W. D. Ford Career-Technical Center
Interested in attending a vigil? Find a location in your area here. Or if you prefer, light a virtual candle and add your name to other supporters.
The SAFE Global Candlelight Vigil follows the warm reception we garnered last year when we initiated the project. This year, it coincides with a new exhibition at Chicago's Oriental Institute, entitled "Catastrophe! The Destruction and Looting of Iraq's Past", opening on April 10.
We have not forgotten. Please join us in commemoration.
