NEW! Roger Atwood takes a critical look at U.S. media coverage of antiquities issues

Roger AtwoodAuthor and journalist Roger Atwood compares coverage by three major newspapers - The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe and The New York Times - of antiquities issues as they relate to museums in the newspapers' respective cities.

As Tyler Green writes on Modern Art Notes blog, "Roger Atwood is probably the top American writer on the antiquities trade. He thinks that the LAT's coverage is tops and the NYT's... well... is not: 'If you were expecting the [NY] Times to cover the Met the way the [Boston] Globe covered the MFA or the LA Times covered the Getty, you would be disappointed. Often, the Times moved the story forward by simply citing the previous day's LA Times story about the investigations involving the Getty.' Ouch."

Roger Atwood is a Winner of SAFE's Beacon Award.

2008 SAFE Beacon AwardsFollowing our first Beacon Awards event in 2006, SAFE will present the 2008 Beacon Awards to Dr. Neil Brodie and Dr. Donny George Youkhanna for their outstanding efforts to raise public awareness about the devastating consequences of the illicit antiquities trade and the looting of ancient sites and monuments around the world.

An Awards Reception will take place on Saturday, January 5th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, during the Archaeological Institute of America's (AIA) Annual Meeting. If you will be in Chicago then, please join us at the Reception and visit us at the SAFE booth.

To commemorate our two distinguished honorees, SAFE will publish and distribute a Souvenir Journal which enables individuals, firms, institutions and organizations to recognize and congratulate the honorees with an advertisement or formal  greeting. The Souvenir Journal serves as a keepsake for this memorable event and provides a low-cost high-impact opportunity to promote your activities, programs and services to a targeted audience of approximately 3,000 attendees from around the world who attend the AIA Annual Meeting. See last year's Souvenir Journal here.

For 2008, the Souvenir Journal cover will be printed in full color. Three full pages will be reserved for color advertisements, announcements and greetings from friends, colleagues and organizations.

All advertisers' names and website addresses will also be posted on the SAFE website, at the SAFE booth, in the SAFE e-newsletter, as well as in the Journal itself.

So join us in celebration and gratitude and reserve space in our Souvenir Journal no later than November 21. We must receive all ad materials no later than November 28.

A video memorial for the Iraq Museum

Candlelight vigil for the Iraq MuseumThe first Global Candlelight Vigil for the Iraq Museum in Baghdad took place over three days - April 10 to 12, 2007 - at museums, universities, private and public schools and other venues around the world. This five-minute video documents some of the most memorable events: from the vigil held on the front steps of the museum in Baghdad to a poem written by elementary school students at a public school in Toronto, Canada.

SAFE thanks organizations and individuals from around the world for taking a moment to hold a remembrance event with us. Gratitude also goes to all the volunteers who helped organize and plan this memorable worldwide event.

The video memorial was presented to Dr. Baha' Mayah, the Adviser for the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and to Dr. Amira Edan, the Chairperson of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Iraq on October 18.
