Global Candlelight Vigil for Iraq: April 10-12

WE MUST NOT FORGET Dr. Donny George Youkhanna and SAFE invite you to participate in a Global Candlelight Vigil for the Iraq Museum. Join us in demanding the return of the Museum's 7,000+ missing antiquities and an end to the ongoing looting of archaeological sites in Iraq and around the world. On April 10, 11, or 12, light a candle and observe a minute of silence.

Visit the SAFE Vigil page to watch Dr. Youkhanna's video invitation and learn more about the looting and destruction of our shared cultural heritage. Learn how to organize a vigil in your community, or locate a scheduled gathering in a growing list of cities from North America to the Middle East, including: Toronto, Vancouver, San Francisco, the campuses of Boston University, Cornell University, New York University, Stony Brook University, the University of Oregon, the Beirut National Museum ... and more locations that are being added each day.

We have also updated the Vigil page with downloadable flyers in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. And see our mentions in international media, including DailyKos.

Send us your photos and video. Take pictures or video of your gathering and send them to SAFE by April 25th for inclusion in our Video Memorial. We will deliver the Video Memorial to Dr. Amira Edan, the Director-General of the Iraq Museum as well as to international decision makers.

 Out of Context

Preservation Imperative SAFE launches a three-part lecture series, Preservation Imperative, in partnership with the Bayside Historical Society in Bayside, New York.

On April 22, SAFE Member and St. John's University archaeology professor Paula Lazrus will present the first lecture in the series: Out of Context, which investigates the meaning of context in the field of archaeology and how the loss of archaeological context caused by looting and site destruction affects the many ways we understand, and our ability to preserve, the past.

 Rick St. Hilaire talks antiquities

Rick St. Hilaire Rick takes it to the internet: Fire up your internet radio on April 9.  Old friends, new memories

Welcome Donny George In early February, SAFE held an intimate luncheon to welcome Dr. Donny George Youkhanna, who recently left Iraq for the U.S. Hear about Dr. Youkhanna's experiences in the SAFE podcast interview. Despite freezing weather, friends and colleagues enjoyed warm conversation and delicious refreshments. One of the day's highlights was a presentation of books to Dr. George, to start a new library and help him replace more than 800 titles that he left behind when he fled Iraq.

Those who would like to contribute to Dr. George's new library in the U.S. please contact us. A special thanks to SAFE Members Alyson Schultz who underwrote the party, and Sam and Barbara Koz Paley who made their beautiful home available for the event.
