 Participate: Iraq Vigil

Call-to-action vigil video On April 10-12, Donny George Youkhanna and SAFE invite you to join us in remembrance, to mark the anniversary of the looting of the Iraq Museum.

Four years ago, thousands of ancient artifacts from the cradle of civilization were stolen or destroyed. Even more devastating, the looting of ancient sites continues to this very day, not only in Iraq, but all around the world.

Pause for a moment of silence and light a candle. Record your personal moment of remembrance with photographs or a short video. Send them to us and we will create a "video memorial" with images from other vigils around the world.

Call for the return of more than 7,000 antiquities that are still missing from the Museum. Demand an end to the international black market trade of antiquities, which feeds the looting of archaeologicaI sites, in Iraq and around the world. Protect ancient civilizations not just for the people of Iraq but for all of us, and for generations to come.

Members and other friends, let us know if you would like to lead a vigil in your area. As news & updates subscribers, you are the first to be invited.

 Looters or governments?

In his paper, Looters, Governments, Who is Responsible? Dr. Donny George discusses the looting of Iraq's museums and archaeological sites in 2003.

The paper touches on 40 years of repressive governments, a poor educational system, and large scale poverty and starvation in Iraq, and the effects of these pressures on the Iraqi people.

Dr. George presented the paper at the most recent Archaeology in Conflict conference at the University College of London.

SAFE says "YES to Guatemala and Mali"

In our last newsletter, we urged readers to support continued U.S. import restrictions on antiquities from Guatemala and Mali.

SAFE contributed to this effort by preparing background information and submitted a statement on behalf of each country to the State Department. Read our letters and reports for Guatemala and Mali.

We are grateful to Elvira Giraldez, Christopher Heaney, Elizabeth Gilgan, and Matthew Piscitelli, for their work on Guatemala, and Claire Hilmer for her work on Mali. Tomorrow morning, Elizabeth and Claire will travel to Washington to show their support at the public hearing.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our members and volunteers, SAFE continues to participate in this important forum.
